UK/EU law around CPSR - Mixing recipes?

Hello my lovely soapers,

I'm currently in the "planning phase" of my soap journey, and have to confess I haven't made a single bar yet! However I like to do a lot of reading before I start a new project and I'm very excited about this one. One question I have not been able to find the answer to online is about UK/EU law around CPSR (I can hear the groans from here!).

As far as I understand it, I (eventually!) find a recipe I like for the base soap, and get this approved with a list of variations... However if I wanted to say.... make a colour gradient in a soap am I allowed to mix {variant A - red} with {variant B - white} together in the mould assuming I made the respective batters up accurately according to the assessments before pouring? These will potentially mix in the mould, making a new variant or is this allowed? In a similar vein, if you made soap dough with A, can it be used as an embed in B?

One more piece of advice, if I may... You posted your query in the appropriate Forum. Good for you! However, you might want to use the Edit button to change the Title of your thread to "UK/EU law around CPSR" or something similar to attract members who are knowledgeable about that subject.

The short answer is yes***. So long as you ONLY use what has been approve, you can mix it in any way. Example: You submit a recipe to make a Red (Red Riot), White (Titanium Dioxide), and Blue (Summer Blue) Union Jack Soap 'cuz you be very patriotic. Later, you can take some same three colors and make a Pink and Purple Soap. And since you were smart to max out your variations and added Yellow (Solar Yellow) for 'stars', you can combine to make Green and Orange.

*** - It should be noted that I live in the US and only sell in the US, but I do have an interest in soap making in other countries...from laws, to local ingredients and types of soap made. As such, I highly recommend watching and contacting Lisa with "I Dream in Soap" (she speaks a lot of UK requirements/assessments in her YT videos) and Tiggy with "Tiggy Makes Soap" (older videos).

I've been watching "I dream in soap" for a few weeks now (my husband calls this my "soap porn"), she makes some very beautiful creations. I just couldn't understand this "mixing" bit. Looks like if your cunning with your variations you can keep the red tape to a minimum.

You're in good company! There's a lot of that happening around here... have a look at a this recent thread featuring over 350 soap pics/posts by SMF members. The challenge threads are also fun to browse when you have nothing better to do and you want to be totally blown away. Just avoid "What Soapy Thing Have You Done Today" -- you can get lost in there and never come out!!!
