I am looking into making sunscreen for this summer. Has anyone heard or know if Red Raspberry Seed oil can be used by expecting Moms?? I have read different articles but RRSO seems to have a naturally high SPF factor of 28 - 50, so I would love to be able to use it but want it to be a product that is safe for pregnant women and children too.

I am no expert but I thought it was just some essential oils that you had to avoid when you are pregnant (and also for the little ones). If you have any allergies you should do a spot test to check the oil first. If you are making sunscreen be sure to add non-nano zinc oxide; vegetable oils only protect against one type of UV rays whereas zinc oxide will reflect both UVA and UVB rays.
Good luck, I have tried a few sunscreen recipes and haven't really been happy with any yet.

Also keep in mind if you are selling you cannot list it has having a SPF. I feel sunscreen is still best left to the experts. You would not like it if someone used one you made and ended up with a severe sunburn and neither would they. Also your insurance may not cover any problems with such a product

If you are selling the product in the USA look over this.

If you are making it exclusively for personal use, you might want to look at titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (I believe that's the main active ingredient in most sun screens). However, I live entirely too close to the sun and don't trust my health to anything less than laboratory verified SPF. Some things are simply not worth the risk.

Turns out chicken oil could work to protect against UV radiation. A blend of chicken oil, carrot seed oil and raspberry seed oil might be alright. You would make everyone around you hungry though, smelling like fried chicken.

*I should make a blend and send it to these guys for testing.

A less accurate/crude test could be done with sun sensitive paper at home. It could be fun to test various home-made products out.

Thank you all for your input. I was making it for a few friends to test, not really looking to sell. We are just wanting to get away from the chemicals in commercial sunscreen. I definitely will use the Non Nano Zinc Oxide as this is the ingredient that will protect you from the UVA and UVB rays. I also will use Shea Butter, Raspberry Seed Oil (SPF 28 - 50) , Carrot Tissue oil, Coconut oil, Wheatgerm and Jojoba oil. I will post back here if I have any good results. It seem like I will have to wait for better weather though. We have rain here right now.

What Carolyn (cmzaha) said.

In my country there is a slowly growing trend for everything natural (sunscreen included, a balm one ffs). Afaik, zinc is not easy to mix. It is getting scary coz most of them are clueless and thought everything can be made au naturel :(
