Hello, I am going to start making my own sugar scrubs and I ordered everything I need for it after researching key ingredients from an ingredients list on one I purchased from Ulta. I'm going to start with 8oz containers but I can't for the life of me find a recipe that includes all the ingredients I have. So I have no idea how much of each I need to use. The ingredients I have are:

Shea butter
Silica gel (powder)
Avocado oil
Safflower oil
Jojoba oil
Sweet almond oil
Evening primrose oil
Vitamin E
Ascorbic Acid
Polysorbate 80
Sorbic Acid (preservative)

I have sugar and essential oils and those I can figure out to personal preference pretty much but everything else I have no idea how much to use. Most "recipes" I find are super holistic and I, honestly, don't care much for that.

I can't help you with all those ingredients. Make a lot of sugar scrub but not used many of those (no silica gel, ascorbic acid, poly 80 or sorbic acid). I use oils, butter, emulsifying wax, stearic acid, fragrance & colors & preservative and sugar.

Here's a couple places to start.

In the first link they make mention of using stearic acid as a way to give "body" to the scrub and it aids also in stabilization. If I'm understanding that right it sounds like it has the same results as using silica. I'm just wondering now if the 3% ratio is going to be the same for silica as it is for stearic acid.

I see you chose sorbic acid as your preservative. See http://makingskincare.com/preservatives/ for their review of this preservative. Sorbic acid has some real downsides -- not a broad spectrum preservative, unstable, unpleasant odor, potentially irritating to facial skin -- that I would be uncomfortable with.

Here are some threads on SMF that discuss emulsifying scrubs --
