Straws for hanger swirl

Can I use any old plastic straw over my wire for a hanger swirl? Or are some made from inferior plastics that will dissolve in the lye and ruin my soap?

I would imagine you could, but it seems like it would get pretty messy. Plus the size might hinder the ability to get delicate swirls. I used to use just a plain wire clothes hanger until I bought this tool a few years ago:

I have used plain plastic straws from the grocery store as well as from fast food restaurants and none have ever deteriorated by coming into contact with soap batter.
