I'm making my first batch of soap using the 100% Rooto brand of lye and I noticed some slight crusty stuff at the top. I'm planning on straining but is it safe? I've always gotten my lye from a soap supplier, and am leery for some reason.

Hi Cactuslily, I've never used the Rooto brand but have gotten the slight crust before with both the Roebic brand from Lowes and from my regular lye supplier. I'm not sure what causes the crust but I always use a strainer when adding my lye water to my oils and it has never been a problem for me (my soaps always turn out fine).

If I use 40% lye concentration, I get heavy white floaty crust every time, and especially if I use a 1:1 lye ratio. It's ash forming, I thought at least, and I just leave it....tidbit...the more floaties, the less ash on soaps I get. And by less I mean no ash lol!
