Since winter/cold season is in full effect. Those of us with small ones know they are not the best about blowing their nose the proper way. Mine tend to either 1) go through a box of tissues leaving them scattered about; not really blowing just wiping 2) using their shirts if can't get to tissues fast enough3) licking it off. Ewwee!

Which leaves a crusty, red, inflamed upper lip. I was toying with an idea making a "Snot salve". What types of healing oils would you choose? I will brainstorm tonight and share in the morning. Would you use any EOs? I remember my mom would smear something in a small tin menthoIatum salve? Spelling? Not sure if they make it anymore..

I use a mix of coconut oil (1T), vitamin e (1g), and tea tree oil(1g). I started this mixture to combat cold sores but my proportions are off and now I just use it on the dry skin that happens with tissue rubbing. I probably wouldn't use the tea tree with the little ones but the coconut oil and vitamin e are nice on my skin.

Essential oils are powerful and need to be used judiciously. They are not necessarily, like so many YL, DoTerra, and mommy bloggers proclaim, the SAFE alternative to every medical problem out there.

Robert Tisserand is considered by many to be the go-to expert on Essential oils. That doesn't mean he claims you should use essential oils in place of proper medical advice.

Here is a list pertaining to the use of essential oils with children. It comes from his book. It might help you decide what is safe for your child. (below....sorry, it's long)

As for the irritation on her poor lip - simply gently cleaning it, let it air dry thoroughly, then keep the area covered well with a non petroleum or non petroleum wax lip balm will let her skin heal. I'd also suggest something without any unnecessary additives such as scents, colors, flavors.

For my 9 year old, I made a lotion bar with stearic acid, coconut oil, shea butter. She rubs it on any cut or skin problem she gets and finds it soothing. (I think it's the stearic acid)

Hope you fine something that works - she doesn't need that discomfort on top of everything else!

Thanks for all the input. I'm thinking about going all out and purchase some more expensive oils for a healing salve. The oils I am considering are: avocado, emu, wheat germ and squalane. Also I wanted to try murumuru butter. I have never heard of tucuma butter before but it sounds like it has great healing properties too.

I think I will leave out Essential oils. If I decide to use any, I would choose lavender and chamomile.

Thanks again for the replies. A lot of good food for thought.

swiftcraftymonkey has a recipe for non-petroleum jelly. I think it's 95% castor and 5% beeswax. But with the licking and the effects of castor on the digestive track...I'd stick with the lanonlin and petroleum jelly!

Like you, DD, I've seen castor called out specifically, but I get good results with any oil. Sunflower or rice bran oil or a blend of both work well.

The basic recipe I've seen is 5% to 15% beeswax to get the consistency you want. I normally use 10% to 15% to make a soft salve that doesn't get overly soft at summertime temps, but is still a soft spreadable paste in the winter time. The balance of the 100% will be one or more oils.

Warm the mixture in a hot water bath until the beeswax melts completely and the mixture looks clear. Take the mixture off heat and stir frequently. It will turn opaque yellow or milky white as the beeswax solidifies. If you don't stir often, especially right at the temperature when the beeswax starts to solidify, the finished salve might feel grainy. If that happens, remelt and try again. After the mixture is cool, stir in your oil-soluble, temperature-sensitive ingredients. You can't add water-based ingredients to this recipe.
