Would you please take a look at this recipe and tell me if I have the water discount % low enough and the oil %s good enough for this to trace slow enough to be considered "slow tracing" if my oils don't accelerate hopefully? I partially melt my hard oils to get them started then do the thermal transfer method after my lye cools considerably.

I'm not sure what your real purpose is... are you trying for something that is not only slow to trace, but that doesn't thicken up quickly after you've reached trace (like for designs where you want a light trace)? Or are you really interested in slow trace because you'll be working with an FO that will really speed things up and could give you problems?

In general, I think your recipe is fine. In other words, I would feel comfortable using that recipe for most of what I do with swirls and other designs. But if you really want to slow it down, you could up the olive by eliminating the shea and possibly reducing the lard. Also, going back up to full water should slow it down too, though I think your 35% is reasonable.

Why would you lower the lard? Lard is a slow to trace oil. I'd suggest completely melting all your hard oils then mixing the with your slightly warm liquid oils. Soap as cool as you can to slow trace.

Thanks yall. Yes, this is for swirls etc. I have done no cp swirls yet, only hp swirls. I thought lard was a slow tracer too? Yes I would like it to not thicken up quickly too. I am dying to do the peacock and secret feather swirls etc. I have the lard percent where it is because I'm afraid of the soap ending up too soft.

You recipe is very similiar to mine and you should be fine. I use palm instead of lard. Soap cool. I soap at room temp. Blend only until emulsified not a true trace and I add my fragrance/eo to my oils before my lye solution. I ususally have plenty of time to do what I want. Some FO's do make me move a bit faster.

Lard is one of the slowest tracing hard oils in my experience. Palm oil when I used it (I don't anymore) always traced medium to quickly depending where I got it. Coconut and castor oil trace quickly for me. Olive and other liquid oils trace slower. Tallow - just for future reference traces medium to quick, I always use lard when I want a very slow or just emulsion batter. (Note I do always use coconut oil as well but in moderate proportion when I want something slow moving, castor as well.) Coconut around 15% Castor at 3% or less.

Thanks again yall. Hopefully I'll have the cajones to try swirls today ;) What cleansing # do you shoot for? It started off at 10 or 11 so I added some pko to get it up a lil. Those darned numbers drive me batty! The cleansing #s run from 12-22 and my recipe is only a 12 so do yall think that it will even clean well?

12 should be fine. Remember those numbers are just guidelines. Castille is 0 cleansing and still cleans. Mine range between 14-17 with a 7-9% superfat. I use coconut and pko in mine and don't find them drying at all.

Awesome! Now to try to find what to mix with this ugly red oxide to get a real red. I've watched videos and they don't turn out right for me. I can't afford ordering massive amounts of micas for my big ole batches to be able to have enough to hit a lick. It's just too expensive. :(

That's good advice. I was just thinking that going to mostly soft oils would slow it down even more. Wasn't sure how slow it needs to be and 5% shea isn't much to drop. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Carabou. Thanks for trying to help me. Thanks to everyone who takes time out to help when they can. I do appreciate each and every one of you and value you more than you know. I've never had a time in my life where so many people has cared enough to take time out for me. It means more to me than any of you will ever know. I could cry.
