Hi I have a recipe for hydrolyzed silk but I only have tussah silk how can I make the tussah silk hydrolyzed ty. My recipe is for face cream so I can’t use lye to dissolve it thanks

I was also curious about this and did a little research. Apparently the silk has to be broken down by a strong acid or base solution, such as a sodium hydroxide solution or phosporic acid solution. The resulting solution is strained and then neutralized with the appropriate counter. For instance, you'd use something like a citric acid solution to neutralize the hydrolized proteins that were made with a sodium hydroxide (alkaline) solution.

Is it doable at home? Perhaps, but you'd need to be pretty skilled at graduated dilution of alkaline solutions with pH testing until you reach a level that is safe to use in your products.
