Hi!

I'm new to soapmaking and am trying to decide on a good mechanic's soap recipe. A couple things I'm looking for:
-I want it to be white-ish (not too yellow) so maybe no palm oil?
-I want to use pumice powder. Thoughts on how much?
-I want to use peppermint essential oil. I read that you need to be careful not to use too much. How much is appropriate?

Thank you for any recipe suggestions or tips!

Becky

I just talked to my brother in law who is a diesel mechanic and has been trying out all of my soaps. We have a winner for a mechanic's soap:

Salt bar recipe (I think it came from on here)
Castor Oil 5.0%
Coconut Oil 80.0%
Olive Oil 15.0%

8% Lye
superfatted by 8%

This is my favorite mechanic soap recipe:

7.5 oz coconut oil
15 oz olive oil
7.5 oz palm oil
1.8 oz lanolin (add at light trace)

12 oz cold strong coffee
4.3 oz lye
2 tps ground pumice (add at trace)
1/4 finely ground coffee (add at trace
Fragrance or essential oil I like sandalwood fragrance oil

I use a 10% superfat in my base recipe and a tsp of fine pumice PPO..Mechanics and gardeners love it..

my favorite all purpose "get-'er-done" soap:

30% lard (leaves hands nice & soft!)
30% coconut
30% olive
10% castor (lotsa creamy bubbles)

2 level tsps. sugar add & dissolved in water BEFORE adding lye

5% superfat 33% water (lye x 2.125)

2 tsp extra fine pumice (BB or WSP?)

for extra conditioning I like to add an add'l 1 oz canned coconut milk (ppo) at thin trace just before adding e/o...coconut milk does not darken if soap heats up and gels, unlike most regular milk products.

to my surprise, hubby liked my last batch scented with 2 parts lemongrass and 1 part lavender...I like essential oils the best in these kinds of soapies...cedarwood, litsea cubeba, tea tree, eucalyptus & spearmint, rosemary, etc.

don't turn your nose up at lard until you've tried it...it's cheap, readily available and comparable to shea butter...in fact it should be called the "poor man's shea."

one last thing, without the pumice, this makes a lovely and economical "family" soap...it gives them something nice and keeps their sticky fingers off my "special soapies" just for me-LOL!
