I have been reading about the value of pine tar soap and was interested in making some, but, have run into some obstacles.
I have heard that pine tar contains 'creosote' which is toxic. But, there are some people who make this soap using pine tar that doesn't contain creosote, but I can't figure out where they get their pine tar from. Does anyone have a good source for pine tar that doesn't contain creosote? Thanks for any help.

Are you in the US? Check out horse-care suppliers - Pine Tar is used to treat wood (I imagine it would be these ones that may have addes creosote) but it is also used to treat horses hooves.

Bear in mind, creosote is actually the next stage of processing from Pine Tar.

abit confused, what brands of pine tar are creosualt free and were online [US] can i purchase it ?

See this (This is the brand I use, purchased at a feed store, where horse supplies are available): https://www.statelinetack.com/item/horse-health-pine-tar/E002461/

This is the brand I use.

Also discussed here at SMF in the past:

Bickmore is NOT safe for human use per their website: https://support.jamestowndistributors.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015933874-Creosote-in-pine-tar

This "does it have creosote or doesn't it" discussion doesn't have a firm, definitive answer.

No one, including manufacturers such as Auson, is providing the actual chemical analyses and the relevant standards that define the meaning of "creosote free". Until that information is made available to the consumer, the claim of "creosote free" is merely hype.

On a related note, I have yet to find any pine tar that is definitively labeled as "pharmaceutical grade" with actual proof to back it up (although others claim they have). Until the test data and the testing standards are readily available, it's one person's or one company's unsubstantiated claim versus another's.

I've given up worrying about it. If it bothered me enough, I just wouldn't make pine tar soap and sidestep this issue entirely.
