Where is a cheap and good wholesale source for lye?
Where is a good wholesale source for oils.

Do organic "palm / olive / coconut oils make any real difference in soap making?

Are there organic essential oils?

I purchase my lye from Bitter Creek Candle Supply.

The only problem is that you have to order the same amount of other products in order to buy from them, but I've found that they are the cheapest for lye and shipping charges. Having to buy other products doesn't bother me because I just buy some base oils or candle making supplies.

I buy most of my oils from Soaper's Choice. http://soaperschoice.com/

As far as organics go, I have not seen a difference when I make my soap.

There are organic essential oils out there but they are expensive, and as far as I know, most of the "healing" properties of the essential oils are -for the lack of a better word- "burned off" during the sap process... I use essential oils because they are natural scents for my soaps.
I get my essential oils from New Directions Aromatics

Hope I have answered your questions.

I buy my lye in a local grocery store. It's in the cleaning section with the plumbing stuff like Drain-O...$3.69 for a 1lb container. I forget the name brand, but it plainly states 100% lye on the label.
BTW, I found this by checking every store I went into for lye...only one of countless places sold it. Hope this helps!!

Hi Node4 & welcome. Where do you live? I could recommend places but I live in Australia which is no good to you unless you live here too. People normally say where they live when they introduce themselves on this forum and there is a place to put your location into your profile. Have fun.

I get my lye from Ace Hardware in the plumbing section.
SoapersChoice has reasonable prices for oils.

And oils from here.

I believe essential oils are all natural.

I agree with Mrs Fusion about the lye. Essential Depot is good stuff, in bead form so it doesn't go airborne. It arrives in very secure packaging, a childproof can, inside a bag, inside a box. I noticed on Amazon that some people sell lye in bags??? Not with kids in my house!

You can buy lye at Ace Hardware. In my neighborhood, it's about $4 a pound... Essential Depot is still 22 cents per ounce cheaper, even after the horrible shipping cost.

I like the Soaper's Choice website, but with shipping to Nevada it's no less expensive than Brambleberry, which is just 2 states away from me. But for small-scale oils, I just go down to Whole Foods or Walmart. It's not worth the shipping if I'm just buying a pound here or there.

In Reno, it's very difficult to buy lye. You can only go to certain hardware stores, and if you buy too much you go on a watch list. Nevada has a huge meth problem, though.

I'm wondering how availability is state by state (country by country.)

I am in NC and as far as I know they have taken the good old red devil off of most of the shelves in all stores here...same thing as NV.....stupid meth heads. We May be able to buy it at lowes or ace....but i haven't bothered checking. I order lye from DudaDiesel.com, it's in TN so shipping isn't bad, good prices per pound, childproof, beads...and they ship super fast.

Where to buy Lye

We lost our "safeway" lye when the meth making got so bad. I live in N.W. Oregon and Essential Wholesale.com in near Portland so it is the cheapest for me because of shipping. I went on the internet and typed in soapmaking supplies. A little searching might produce a supply near you. 60Countrygirl
