Hi everyone,

I mold in PVC tubes, hence a 3 inch round soap shape. I am looking for a source of
~4 inch round or square wood soap dishes to package a bar with, but am not having much luck. I did find one that uses cedar, but it was a bit too rough looking for my preference. Does anyone have a supplier for these that they might share with me?

Thanks!
Barbara

If you have an Ikea store near you you can buy these for only .99 each. I I have some and they are nice:

Also- if you are not averse to making your own, you can go down to Lowe's and by some decorative wood molding, cut it into soap dish size pieces with a saw, sand them down smooth, and then seal them with a wood sealer. Here are some that I made a couple of years ago (just scroll down a couple of pics after clicking on the link):

That same soap dish from Ikea, in Australia is $4.99. Not fair.

Thanks for the idea regarding the decorative wood moulding Irishlass. :D

PS: love your soaps.

If you have a way to cut it you can make your own. You can get 3-3 1/4 inch molding and cut it, sand the sides and there you go! You can seal it too if you want.

I'll see if I can get a picture of it.

Wonderful tip ...and I enjoyed seeing your soap.
Are all the stamps done with mica? What makes it stick?
What keeps it from coming off?

Thanks y'all! :)

MyNaturesArt- I buy my french fry bags at a restaurant supply store called Smart & Final. They are very cheap- about $13.00 for a box of 2,000.

CastorFan- yes, all my stamps were done using mica, along with rubber stamps that I bought at Michael's craft store. Yes-rubber stamps do work! :) Just make sure they have good defined designs that aren't too 'busy'. Also, make sure to stamp right after unmolding and cutting when the soaps are still slightly soft.

What I do is put a light dusting of mica on a small plate, dip the stamp into the mica, shake off any excess, and then press the stamp into my soap. I don't wet the stamp or anything- I just use it dry. Then I lightly spritz the stamped soap with alcohol to 'set' the mica in place. After that I let the soap cure, and as it cures the mica seems to meld to the soap really well. It'll come off when you wash with it of course, and some will rub off if you over handle it, but for the most part, it sticks fairly well. I still have a bar of my Gold Frankincense and Myrrh soap stamped with gold mica that you see in those pictures in the link I gave (that soap is about 2 years old now), and the mica is so set on the soap that it won't even come off when I rub my (dry) finger over it.

IrishLass - Love the soapdish idea! So simple, but they turn out beautiful. And they don't compete with your gorgeous soaps.

Thanks for the tip, Lass -- I ordered (haven't received yet) a rubber stamp and was wondering how I would use it.
Was planning on trying it "plain" first -- then I wondered if the
liquid CP soap coloring would work (wondered about smears)
Your tips give me hope that mine will work as well.
My stamp may be too detailed to work properly -- if so, I'll just use it
for the outside of boxes/mail/whatever.
Thanks

the problem i see with a lot of these, is that they wouldn't be big enough for a large bar of soap (I like large bars).

i've got a router table, and have been contemplating a nice design/bit to use

I've seen the wooden one from Ikea and like it, but the shape doesn't do well with round soaps, imho. Here is an idea I'm toying with: Aurora Glass Foundry creates 4 inch coasters from recycled glass. The raised pattern on the coaster should help keep the soap from sitting in a puddle and they're pretty to boot. They'll cost $7 each (plus shipping) and the profits benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which does terrific charitable work. Good for the environment and good for people. I'm going to see if they'll sell me a set with mixed colors. Still would like to offer a less expensive wood dish, too.

I know Paul AKA Soapmaker Man makes soap dishes from high quality pine I believe. But they are only in a rectangular shape I believe. but I have bought about 5 from him. And they work beautifully!
