So here is the first part of my over the Rainbow loaf, got the base in with the pvc pipes for the negative space. Scented with Black Raspberry Vanilla. And I'm OUT OF LYE ughhhh!
It takes a couple days to set before pulling the pvc pipes out so if I can't get it in time, might have to go to ACE. Do yall know who has super fast shipping without paying an arm and a leg. BB takes too long, WSP is out of lye, is the lye guy fast shipping, might go with Nature's Garden. Unless yall know of a faster shipper lol.

Essential Depot is usually pretty fast for me (I live in North Carolina). Can't wait to see your finished soap! Your set-up looks great!

Thanks. Ohh I'm looking at a couple of their molds too. The 25 dollar sale.

Depends on where you are. For me, Lye Guy is very fast - but I am in MI and he is in upstate NY, so we are only a couple states away. I prefer to order from Natures Garden, Nurture, Lye Guy and Soaper's Choice. I used to like WSP too, but they have added on so many handling fees and such that it takes them a week to ship to me. Once it ships I have it next day - but it sits with them forever.

I think ACE or Lowes is the best bet for spur of the moment lye. It costs more, but it can be a stop gap until you can order in bulk.

Is there anywhere local that carries 100% lye? In a pinch I can drive to a Tractor Supply Company to buy it. Much faster than waiting for shipment. It's not ideal, but it works. (By that I mean the having to drive for an hour or so to buy it.)

For those of you that can purchase lye in your local Ace or Lowe's LUCKY YOU! TN law regulates anything remotely associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamines. That means that all OTC decongestants are behind the pharmacy counter, you have to sign for them and can only purchase a 30 day supply. All "drain cleaners" are liquid and/or no longer "100% lye" any more and most stores are not carrying anything that contains "lye" as a main ingredient. The TBI and local Meth Task Forces actually do sting operations on hardware stores and mom 'n' pop shops that sell drain cleaners to make sure they're not selling in large quantities and to known manufacturers. I believe GA and AL have laws similar to the TN laws. For a long while TN was "proudly" know as the meth-manufacturing capital of the USA. It's good to be an American!!

I'm from Iowa, where meth is also popular. There is not one store I've found within 150 miles of me that carries lye in stock. Not an Ace, not a Lowe's, nowhere. And when I ask for it, the help is always like, "Pure lye? Like.....for.....???" And when I say "soap." they're like, "oh, sorry. we don't carry it." but are visibly relieved.

Good luck in your search, OP. Those of us in the meth states are rooting for you!

ETA: I tried this tutorial from BB - it was a disaster. When I tried to remove the PVC after 24 hours (no gel) they wouldn't even budge. I ended up having to cut the soap for confetti and scrape it off the PVC. If you manage to succeed, I'll be wanting your secret!

Illinois is the same. You just can't find it here. We actually go one further than OTC meds behind the counter. If you buy a product with pseudoephedrine in it, you actually have to show ID and sign a log. I actually told our drug task force guy I was making soap so I didn't get flagged for my large quantity of online lye purchases lol

PA still has lye in Lowe's, but my local True Value didn't have it. In fact she sounded rather alarmed when I called and asked. It probably didn't help that I then asked what day the knife sharpener guy came. Haha

ETA: awhile back I put in orders through several different suppliers for different soapy things. The Lye Guy had my order to me in two days.

I buy 100% lye at TSC (Tractor Supply Company) in Illinois. Every TSC I have been in still carries it. I have stopped at TSC's in my travels (I do a lot of roadtrips) and always look simply because it's the only store that seems to always carry it no matter what. And I have actually been known to make soap when I travel.

Surprisingly, they have never asked me for an ID, but once I had to sign a log, which I did expect and was surprised when I wasn't asked. But then I usually only buy one bottle, sometimes two, but mostly just one if I am traveling. Besides that, there are usually no more than 2 or 3 bottles on the shelf to begin with, so the stock visibility is pretty limited.

Menards also carries 100% lye under the brand name, Kleen-Out and it is listed as available at the Davenport, Iowa store. Maybe look for those two stores.

Cool deal. I had to change my recipe until I had it down to only what I had left in lye and for some reason it was set on 8% superfat. I'm guessing that's why it looks like cottage cheese on top. I think I'll have to chunk this one.

Don't toss it until you let it harden and cure. You never know what you will get.

My town does not have an ACE hardware. We do have a Lowe's. They sell Roebic. It costs more for 32 oz than I pay for 64 oz from ED PLUS shipping. But they have it.

Louisiana makes anyone purchasing pseudoephedrine sign the computer and it goes into a state data-bank so you can't then go to another town to buy it.

Hmmm, I've tried both of those in my area and no dice. Apparently I need to get to Davenport more often!

OP, I agree with Susie on waiting until it's cured before you give up. I've had some hot messes that turned out to be pretty good after a cure. Not pretty, mind you, but usable and good quality.

Wow, those are some strict restrictions. I live in Nevada, the home of legal prostitution and gambling casinos. You can't go into a grocery store without seeing slot machines! I can still get my lye at the local Ace if I need it in a pinch. It's also sold at chemical supply companies here.
