Why does the recipe call for Sodium Borate? Why not just Borax which, at least in my area, is quite cheap.

It is the same thing. Also called Sodium Tetraborate, Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate, Disodium Tetraborate, or Na2B4O7 • 10H2O .

I think the recipe calls for the chemcial name rather than the brand name because that's what WSP sells. But Borax is just fine. Look at the box and you see the chemical name as the only ingredient.

Sodium Borate and Sodium tetraborate are commonly called Borax. I believe in this application they are interchangeable.
