Lard of the Wild aka Snow Cap Soaping

Today I was hiking in a very remote non-motorized area of southwestern Montana, at 8500 ft elevation, just down from the Continental Divide. I spotted a tiny blue piece of paper on the trail and could hardly believe what it was: a scrap from a Snow Cap Lard box! Here's the scrap, the map location, and a picture of the surrounding scenery. Also a full box for those who have never seen this brand.

That's an awesome find! My aunt lives between Missoula and Helena, and she says there are lots of homesteaders up there.

Ya, I suspect its true purpose was for dutch oven cooking. Lots of folks here use horses and mules to pack a respectable kitchen into the wilderness. But a girl can fantasize about all the soapy possibilities!
