Someone gave me this cocoa butter. It is off white, sort of ivory. Smells chocolatey. Hard but crumbly.

My friend didn't remember if it's refined or unrefined.

Can someone tell me?

If it still has a chocolate scent and is not white it is probably unrefined.

How does cocoa butter get refined? Can I use it okay unrefined? What is the difference in soap making? And if it really needs to be refined and if I can't do it myself....any suggestions?

It is not really a process you can do at home, it takes bleaching and chemicals usually.

Yes, you can use unrefined. There is a chance that some people with VERY sensitive sniffers will smell the chocolate smell in the finished soap - but 95% of people won't.

There is no difference is SAP value, so nothing special to enter on your soap calc.

No need to worry, soap on and be calm.

Awesome. Thanks.....oh....I'm gonna make white soap...which would be better, cocoa butter or shea butter? I have TD....but which butter would turn out whiter when finshed?

It probably won't make much if any difference unless you're using a large amount, but if you want as white as possible then use whichever oil has less color. Probably the shea if it's refined.
