I found this recipe on youtube but it didn't say how much lye or water. It said 31% lye concentration. Is this right?

I should have mentioned, the lady on youtube only gave her fat amounts and the 31% thing, so I put that into soapcalc and that's where this is from.

I'm not sure now about using the lard, it has BHA and propyl gallate, so it's not as pure as I thought. Maybe I should just use something in its place, but I was trying not to buy things online and pay all that shipping.

What can I replace it with that's cheap?

I have used Morrell Snow Cap Lard which contains BHT and BHA with no issues. I have also used Armour Lard with contains BHA, Propyly Gallate and Citric Acid with no issues.

I use Manteca in the blue box. BHT & BHA added to protect flavor with no issues.

Lard is cheap. Shea butter is more expensive but it is the best sub. Shea for lard or lard for shea.

TIP: One day I was weighing my oils when I came up short of shea butter. I went to SoapCalc and did a side-by-side comparison.

I entered 100% shea butter and clicked "Calculate". It showed up in the right column. Then I went down the list of FAs, ticking one after another, and found lard (left column) to be the closest match. 😉
