Whilst doing my daily lurking of these wonderful forums I came across an interesting thread whereas the original poster says they carry insurance for giving away soap. Is this normal? I enjoy making soap for myself, friends and family but certainly do not see being sued by any of them. The thread in question can be found here...

That actually is mine. Yes, I early on got insurance, I am glad I did I don't have to worry about it. I'm not recommending it for anyone else, but I never knew where my soap would end up. No, family and friends would never sue me.

Really not that interesting of a post.

I did give away to family and friends and did not have insurance. However, I would make sure they weren't giving it to others as they were only receiving it as my testers for feedback. Once I began giving it out to others, I had insurance in place. I wan't selling at that point and really didn't plan on it as I was still in my newbie stage of a year or so.

Perhaps I should make such an investment. What kind of insurance would one get for giving away soap?

The one I purchased was from the wholesale supplies plus site. I'm not sure if they still advertise it. It was under $300.00 I believe.

I didnt have one when I was giving it away. If you feel it would help put your mind at ease, I would get it. Wholesale Supplies Plus has one called "Handmade Artisan Insurance" and it is only $275 per year.

Its the one I have currently. I had a question once about something and they got back to me through email in 1 day. It was very easy to set up too. And if you move, you can easily change your address as long as it's within state. They don't cover candles. They also don't provide teaching liability coverage which was my question to them. I'm considering changing to the guild insurance next year and pay extra for it but, I'm not sure it's worth double the price.

They don't cover every state yet but they're getting there.
