hi steppibarra,
it is possible to make hp on a stove; but you need to do it au bain marie. It would be best to buy a double boiler maker, like this one
boilermaker2.jpg

(on brambleberry under hardware)
you'll need to have a thermometer; and keep the temperature between 176 and 194F
make sure you stir well from time to time, to keep the temperature low enough, when it reaches 212F, it can start to lather, and will come out of the pan, on to your stove and stink real bad
let it sit for about an hour, when you start it looks like pudding, when its finished, it's supposed to be vaseline-like

You can do it on the stove with a double boiler, but it's so much easier with a crockpot, and they can be had for cheaper than a double boiler. :)
