How to label

So I posted over in the label forum, but I think the traffic of viewers are better here. So please delete if not allowed to post this here...

So I am new to soap making and I have no plans of selling. Just soaping right now because the weather is nasty. So my question is: I was wondering if I should donate my soaps to my son's 4-H auction that is coming up in a few months or just use them myself? I know it says everywhere to wait a year before you should sell but I'm not selling for myself also if I was to donate how would one go about labeling them, because I don't have a company name to list on them. I know I should list all the ingredients on them. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance..

Just post your question in one place, please. When people post the same thing in multiple forums, it gets really confusing and annoying to have several conversations going about the exact same topic. Ask the moderators to delete whichever thread you don't want.

For what it's worth, many of us don't read threads by going to the individual forums, we use the option to read "New Posts." (Look at the very top of this screen for what I mean.) The New Posts feature shows all new posts and new threads regardless of the forum in which the post or thread is located.

To answer you question about labeling, you don't need a business name. If you follow Marie Gale's recommendations, you'll be fine --

As far as donating soap as a beginner, that's up to you. I didn't donate or sell my soap as a beginner. I felt I was still learning and my product wasn't ready for strangers to use, whether they paid for it or not.

Ask an admin to delete whichever thread you don't want. I recommend IrishLass, lsg, Relle, or Shunt2011. Click the envelope icon in the top right corner of your screen. Click "Start a new conversation". Add the admin's name. Enter a message and send.

After I posted I went to the new post and this one wasn't showing up so I wrote the other post then a little bit later I hit the new post and they were both showing up.

It takes a few moments for new posts to be indexed and to show up in the new post lists, so this is understandable ... fortunately it doesn't require as much patience as soaping (new posts, while not instantaneous, do appear very quickly ).

On giving away soaps while learning to soap:
I also would not give away soap while you are this new.
If you are planning on selling later, I would suggest giving soaps to your testers before giving them to anyone else.
At this point in your learning curve I would suggest that you use those soaps yourself ... and treat them badly!
(store them poorly, leave them in water ... that sort of thing - to see how they stand up) .

I know I will have a lot to treat badly but I figure as soon as the weather breaks I will get out of the mood for soaping (fingers crossed I do) this habit is an expensive habbit. LOL.. Thanks for your feedback.

If you write a new post or comment on a post it often goes to “recent posts” under the button to the left of the page numbers at the top of the “new posts” page.

It’s a good idea to start with small batches so it doesn’t cost too much if you make a bad batch. You need good scales but a 4 bar batch would be ideal to start. 500g or less.
