Question: How many ounces of super fat do I have to add to my recipe ( I am making 2 pounds of soap). the specifications I am using are 9.18 ounces of water, 4.52 ounces of lye, 6.4 ounces of palm kernel oil, 25.6 ounces of palm oil. The recipe calls for 5% super fat/ discount. Just wondering how many ounces that would be? Sorry, I am new to this :)

Use Soap Calc or some soap recipe calculation program to design your soap recipe--just put in 5% for super fat. All the weights of oils and liquid, lye will be calculated for you.

That is kind of what I did and it does not specify. It just says 5%, it does not say how many ounces to specifically use. Here is the Soap Calc I used. I am attaching it below so you can see. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

It's calculated into your recipe. The amounts for your oils already "contain" your superfat... Unless you're using a different calculator that specifically asks if you want to add your SF to HP soap after the cook, in which case you'll be given an amount :)

Oh, just a small tip. If you're able to, try a smaller batch. I'm assuming you're new? Just in case you don't like the outcome, or something goes wrong in the process most people recommended small batches. Less wastage that way.

Hi Jen, it looks like your recipe already has the 5% superfat. Some people set aside a "superfat" oil to add at trace, but I think the general consensus is that there is no need to do this. People really only do this if they are using a small amount of an expensive specialty oil anyway. ETA oops, @Dawni said it better ♡

A 5% superfat would be 5% of the oils, so 32oz x.05=1.6 oz.

It gets complicated once you have multiple oils though, because different oils require different amounts of lye, and the lye also has a preferance for which fatty acids it would like to interact with most. @DeeAnna is the specialist (tagged to correct me if I'm leading Jen astray ;) )

Are you about to make your first batch? This is so exciting!! Just follow the recipe and don't worry about setting anything aside.
