I found a couple of recipes for body wash. One uses water, the other doesn't. However, both use castile bar soap. So do I need to add a preservative?

If so, could I use witch hazel in place of the water, and would it serve as a preservative?

Also, unfortunately the measurements are in volume, not weight. Can somebody please convert the measurements to weight?

2 TB shea butter melted
2 TB jojoba oil or grapeseed, and extra virgin olive oil with good success.
1 TB vegetable glycerin
2 tsp xanthan gum or guar gum -If you're using guar gum try 1/4for starters since some readers have reported the gel is too thick with 2guar gum., sold in health food stores or online-look for Bob's Red Mill brand
1/3 cup castile soap I like to use Baby Mild.
1/3 cup warm water Distilled water for long-term use. The water doesn't need to be hot
10 drops lavender essential oil optional
Special Equipment:
Add the melted shea butter, jojoba oil, and glycerin to a medium-size bowl. Sprinkle the xanthan gum over the top. Allow the gum to rest for 1 minute. During this time the powder should sink into the liquid. After 1 minute, use the immersion blender to dissolve the gum into the oil mixture--pulse the immersion blender for 1 minute. Add the castile soap and warm water to the bowl. Place the immersion blender at the bottom of the bowl. Blend the mixture with the immersion blender for 1-2 more minutes, pulsing up and down. The mixture should turn into a creamy lotion-like consistency during this time.

Pour the shower gel into a soap dispenser. I found my container (pictured) at Target.

While the mixture won't separate, I recommend giving the container a gentle shake before each use. When you introduce water into a product without a preservative you always run the risk of introducing bacteria, so use water-based products quickly.

I haven't ventured far into the world of body products, but you should definitely check out the Swifty Crafty Monkey blog! She has toooons of great information for beginners, as well as tried-and-true recipes with science behind them.

If your product is water-based - yes you will need a preservative. If you are combining oils and waters, you need an emulsifier.

That's about as far as my knowledge goes but I'm sure you will get some more helpful tips!

"...both use castile bar soap..."

Looking at the source article and the instructions -- it's clear that Baby Mild, a Dr Bronner product, is a liquid soap not a bar soap.

As far as expecting us to make the conversions for you, that's a tall order given the ingredients. I'd suggest making the product and weighing everything as you go. Or ask the source author for help. http://livesimply.me/2015/09/02/homemade-moisturizing-shower-gel/

"...could I use witch hazel ... as a preservative?..."

I suppose you could use witch hazel, but it is NOT a preservative. You will need to use liquid Germall Plus or Suttocide to preserve a high pH product like this. And, yes, I'd use a preservative.

Everything has diffident density so we cannot just convert it for you. Different kind of oil has different density.
As DeeAnna said, you might be better off weight it as you go.
And I think you can use witch hazel. Some of witch hazel contains alcohol, so it might change the texture of your finished product. And yes please do use a preservative. Or you risk it growing mold or various bacteria.
You can tried it if you want. But for a product you don't have to shake EVERY TIME before use, maybe try swift crafty monkey's blog like toxikon suggested or search this forum for Irish Lass's liquid soap GLS method. Or Susie's liquid soap tutorial. If you want syndet body wash, then it's swift crafty monkey. True liquid soap using KOH, then Irish lass and Susie's tutorial it is. ;)

Glad to help,cherrycoke216. I am surprised I am feeling so alert today; I was sleep deprived for days and had a twitch in my left eye that wasn't being alleviated by my usual 2 ounces of quinine water. It was getting very concerning. Suddenly today I feel well rested and the twitch seems to be gone at last. Hoping the stress/sleep deprivation, etc. is on the decline and that your brain fog and insomnia will go the same route.

Wow it sounds scary! I mean, you mentioned in some thread you are on a road trip. Does it effect your eyesight while driving?

I was on a roadtrip, but I've been home for several days. Yes, the twitch is annoying while driving, but it wasn't as bad as all that & didn't effect my eyesight.

And thank you for reminding me to take my Ca++ & Mg supplements! I haven't been doing that, no wonder!

My doctor just recommended calcium, magnesium and potassium for my nerve twitches - so I guess this means taking calcium and magnesium, while drinking lots of coconut water?
