I have heard several options for storing your lye mixture but then read elsewhere not to store in that particular container. Could someone please tell me the correct container to store my lye mixture in. I do mostly goat's milk soap, but do some water-based CP as well so would like to have the lye water already prepared. No kids or animals in the soaping area and a lid will be placed on it and it will not be stored on the floor. Thanks!

Some folks use the bottles their liquid laundry detergent comes in since there have a built-in pour spout and the lid closes tightly. I purpose bought 1 gallon semi-transparent HDPE jugs from a local soap supplier. I also have 1 and 5-gal white HDPE buckets with handles to master batch my oils/butters.

Why don't you tell us what options you have heard about? Then we can tell you why the reasons for the caution. This question gets asked a lot and there are many threads that cover the basics. But there's always something floating around that we haven't heard of, so please explain more what you've heard.

Like the other one you posted on -- Lye--how long can it sit?
And these, which I haven't vetted for usefulness, but they touch on this topic --

HDPE, Detergent Bottles, Stainless Steel, #2, & 5 containers, which have all but the stainless steel have been mentioned here as well. I do have a large copper bottom SS cookpot from ages past I never use that has a lid, would this work? Otherwise, I can go to a local restaurant supply store and get a good container with an airtight lid on it.

I took Violetts 2217 advice and went to the Classic Bells website and decided the best decision for me was to purchase either a #2 HDPE or #5 PP container with a screw-on lid.
Thank you all for steering me in the right direction.

Old laundry detergent bottles with the no drip spout is a good container. Plus it has a screw on lid to prevent accidental spills. The only container lye should be place in are ones with a 2 or 5 recycle symbol, I think...

This is a good reference!
Thanks for the great advice! I went to their website and am going to their store tomorrow to pick up my container.
