Buying lye in Mexico

I'm going to visit a girlfriend in Mexico, and she mentioned that she'd like to learn to make soap. I told her that I'd be glad to show her, if she'd gather the basic materials. Anyone know if lye is available in Mexico and where she could get some?

You can get lye in Mexico, but often you’re not sure of the purity level. I’d suggest getting some to bring over the border, but since lye is associated with drug manufacturing that’s a no go if they search your car.

My guess would be that the closer you are to the US border, the better the chances of finding the good stuff.

Hello! I live in Mexico City and get mine at Droguería Cosmopolita. I've heard it's not the best quality but have used it for years no problem
