I'm going to visit a girlfriend in Mexico, and she mentioned that she'd like to learn to make soap. I told her that I'd be glad to show her, if she'd gather the basic materials. Anyone know if lye is available in Mexico and where she could get some?
 
I am not in Mexico, but I am pretty sure you can find it, I have seen posts in a hispanic soap making group in fb. She should look for "soda cáustica"

You can get lye in Mexico, but often you’re not sure of the purity level. I’d suggest getting some to bring over the border, but since lye is associated with drug manufacturing that’s a no go if they search your car.

My guess would be that the closer you are to the US border, the better the chances of finding the good stuff.
