Normally, when I have done my crockpot HP, I use soapcalc to calculate a 5% superfat and just add everything in all together at the beginning.

I am experimenting with shea butter and would like to add it at the end to superfat it, after the cook.

I have spent the last 3 hours (no joke) reading and watching videos to make sure I have it right in my head, but could someone confirm?

From how I understand it, I would first run my recipe through soapcalc at a 5% superfat (or whatever I would want my superfat % to be when done) to arrive at accurate numbers for all my oils, including the shea butter.

Then, I take the shea butter out of the soapcalc recipe, reset the superfat to 0% (or maybe 1% for a margin of error?) to calculate the accurate amount of water/lye needed for ONLY the oils that are actually going to be in the crockpot during the cook)? Is this correct?

Thank you so much!

That is EXACTLY what I do. I work in % in soap calc, so I have to adjust the batch size down when I change the SF to 0, but that is the only difference.

There ARE different methods, as always, but this is a perfectly reasonable method for obtaining x% of the oils by weight being unsaponifed in your HP.

Thank you so much for the speedy reply, Mr. Gentleman! I appreciate it!

Whew! So glad to know I am doing it right. It seems like my brain learns things a certain way and not one thing I read or watched really seemed to click, so I wasn't sure if it was right. And to be honest, there's a LOT of different people telling you to do a LOT of different ways!

I do percentages as well, which also throws me off, to see all those numbers change. Which is why I wanted to make sure.

Thank you so much! :)
