My first shaving soap is a success!

I'm just stunned that this thread still has life. I still use my tub o' soap... it's got legs.

I'm pretty sure that they actually use recycled military surplus urinal cakes in the manufacturing process and that this is an upgrade from their past source: beachside hotels and concert halls.

I'm still stunned by everyone's attempt to slice a soft soap. I suppose that it can't be rubbed on someone's legs or Lady Business (thanks JaimeM); it must be smushed. Soft Shaving Soap = Jar Hard Shaving Soap = Bar Them's the rules, babies.

We like this thread, so bringing it back to life isn't really a bad thing :) As for mixing KOH and NaOH: DeeAnna did this back on page 10, and found that it hardened up the soap nicely. Take a look.

Put down your fountain pens and leave the vintage rover alone. - Shaving question

Ok gang... here are my favourite reasonably-priced brushes. I own and use them, and often give them as gifts. In the UK: http://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/simpsons-grosvenor-boar-bristle-and-mixed-badger-hair-shaving-brush-in-imitations-ivory.php In the US...

    Some of my other hobbies

I've been watching jewelry-making videos to learn how to silver-solder. Sometimes these stoves need to be repaired, so I'm teaching myself how to sil-braise.

And socks. I have many old socks. There is also a collection of ex-girlfriends, but I've since stopped collecting them.

No; I don't sell them. Most of them only require a new set of washers and a serious dose of metal polish. Every so often I need to find a part, but they're not difficult to find. You should see the "before" pictures :) They can be quite old. The small three-legged one on the right dates from...

Here's an odd one: I restore old brass stoves :)

Hold on a minute: you cut it into bars?? It's a very soft soap and will never harden up. Soft shave soaps are made with KOH and are supposed to be poured into a bowl and used with a brush. I have no idea how long it will last in a shower's wet environment, but I suspect that most of it will...

My first shaving soap is a success!

Though shavers often prefer one type of soap (cream, soft, puck, etc...,) it's important to note that we all seem to own and use every conceivable type. We even collect it. A friend just sent me a tub of Slovakian soft soap not because it's supposed to be great, but instead because I want soap...

My first shaving soap is a success!

basically, the lather you've seen has been made by a brush after a bit of vigorous whipping. It's unlikely that you'll get the same lather in a shower of running water when using a washcloth. Also, Songwind's recipe (a clone of Martin de Candre Shave soap "MdC") is a soft soap made in the...

Clay should be in all shave soap recipes.

    My shaving soap

The key is to have small thick bubbles that last a long time. A typical shave lasts several minutes and is done in two or three passes, so the lather must must be resilient. As I've said before, and in this case I can speak for all wet-shavers: we use different soaps and techniques every day...

Please, a small reminder... what's SL again? That lather looks great, by the way :)
