PKF, Palm Kernel Flakes not good for liquid soap?

Hello! Been a while! I"m just curious if any of you could shed some light on if PKF, Palm Kernel Flakes, are not a good idea for liquid soap in any certain percenages? I made a batch and with around 35% PKF and it didn't even gel properly. it was pretty bad. I think I may have bad Glycerine...

    Glycerine and KOH turning brown???

So I got my new KOH delivered and made a couple batches. It most certainly was bad lye. The Glycerine is fine. My olive oil has an expiration date that has passed (costco), so I bought new oil to use. I don't suppose the olive oil could also be bad? it's not that much if I have to toss it...

Extracts Vs Essential Oils for fragrance

I'm curious if anyone can provide me some good information on extracts in conjunction with Liquids Soap. I'm seeing products made with extracts instead of essential oils and i'm guessing because they contain alcohol which allows them to emulsify without any other ingredients. What percentage...

What's your opinion on the Hemp / jojoba used with Dr Bronner's?

Curious to know anyone's input on if they think that Dr. Bronner's Liquid soap uses Hemp and jojoba as a part of the saponified oils, or do you think it is just used as a superfat? Considering their emolliency, I was just wondering if anyone has used them as such in their recipes or their best...

    Cloudy after neutralization?

Take a small flake of KOH or NaOh and add it to water it will make it extremely alkaline so when you add just a drop of the solution to it, it will turn bright pink, that is how you know what is bad and common sense will follow. I don't exactly like licking my soap, and I approach things with...

Pine tar, is that "tall"? Where do you buy yours from?

    Cloudy after neutralization?

If it's milky, it probably was neutralized too much. You didn't mention how you made the borax solution so we can't tell if 3 tablespoons is enough. My guess is it was too much. LS tends to get milky when the PH drops way too far in my experience. Usually that means it won't work very well...

    Glycerine and KOH turning brown???

I agree. I actually went and made another batch, this time, i dumped out some of the KOH from the container and used it from the middle of the unopened container. I made the same batch. success! I also noticed that the browning effect in the glycerine was very faint. I used the same spoon...

Curious - Why the general negative impressions for ED?

I would love to know more about this because, on another thread, I was talking about having problems with my KOH within the Glycerine method turning brown. Also a batch I just did today from an unopened KOH container just turned into crap. Never saponified properly. These containers were from 2...

    Glycerine and KOH turning brown???

Alright I'm guessing this crap is bad. I grabbed the unopened KOH and it didn't turn brown like last time but did change with a tinge of brown. I'm going to pin the blame on the KOH and assume the Glycerine is fine. I mean it's glycerine. I used this recipe from soapcalc: Coco 92 degree...

    Glycerine and KOH turning brown???

I am microwaving my glycerine to about 230 or so. The KOH came from Essential depot and was in individual bottles, but the one I used was in a half empty bottle that is over 2 years old. I'll try using one of the unopened bottles, but i weighed the bottle and all and it was 2.12 lbs so I...

    Glycerine and KOH turning brown???

I'm using the Glycerine method to make my liquid soap. I purchased a huge amount of it in March 2013 (about 8 gallons). I also bought a lot of KOH from Essential Depot. I made liquid soap with this a little less than 2 years ago. I made a lot of soap. I heat up the Glycerine to about 230...

    Palm Kernel Oil VS Flakes?

I noticed that Dr Bronners now has formulated there liquid soaps to include coconut, palm kernel oil and olive oil. I have some PKO in it's way here to try.

    Thickening Liquid Soap

I've already seen that people caught on to the using the 2:1 glycerine method instead of water. That really speeds things up! I was doing this following soap 101 tutorials on Youtube that showed how it was done. I'll never make soap LS without it that is for sure! Also, I just saw someone...

    Thickening Liquid Soap

Hello, You did not post your recipe oil percentages. Oils High in Coconut may not be thickened by salt. I believe I was the one who had originally shared that salt could thicken soap over 2 years ago but if you add too much it will ruin it. I've been away for 2 years so I'm interested to see...

I think most people can agree with Wikipedia's definition of Castile soap as any liquid or bar soap that is made with simple ingredients that are from Vegetable fats. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castile_soap The whole "true" castile soap conversation is a bit useless as nearly everyone...

    Palm Kernel Oil VS Flakes?

well 4.5 years old or not, professional soapers and home hobbiests alike should have accurate info To be able to make informed decisions. So now anyone can see that hydrogenated flakes are useful without a huge change in their recipe.

    Palm Kernel Oil VS Flakes?

I'm sorry but I must disagree with some of the respondents here. I am finding Flakes of Palm Kernel Oil that are partially hydrogenated and according to Soapcalc, they have different properties especially with Oleic and Stearic acids. Just make sure the flakes are not hydrogenated and I think...
