Keep Your Superfat Up when Using Orange Juice

Lindy, I am beyond worrying about hurt or offended. The "sensible" comment was aimed at whoever doing the video. As much as everyone seems to think she walks on water, I find her experiment extremely unscientific. She may be very good at making soap, but absolutely terrible at experiment...

Keep Your Superfat Up when Using Orange Juice

Thank you, Dorado! And if you happen to be in the US, do let me know. And I mean it. Lindy, I would be more than happy to share the spreadsheet, and interested in knowing how well/poorly it works, and will tweak it to add more fruits and/or adjust the numbers used. Unfortunately I cannot...

Keep Your Superfat Up when Using Orange Juice

Thank you, Green Soap! I am amazed at the variety of hybrid citrus you have! :-P Anyway, I worked up a rough spreadsheet where you can just plug in the amount of juice you use in ml, and it will tell you the amount of lye consumed by the acids. So you can play with the numbers based on the...

Beer Soap, Wine Soap, Pepsi Soap?

In addition to sugar, you may also want to consider the acidity of soft drinks, even flat soft drinks will still contain a fair amount of carbonic acid. Some food for thought:  http://www.gourmetomatic.com/ph_guide_ph%20_of_common_beverages.html

Keep Your Superfat Up when Using Orange Juice

In any science experiment, it is customary to do the calculations first before jumping in the lab and start throwing chemicals around. The references and calculations showed that with ripe orange juice, it will only affect the resulting superfat 1 to 2%. As said in the original post, you don't...

Keep Your Superfat Up when Using Orange Juice

I hate to disappoint you, Lindy, the video has nothing to do with what I wrote. You are comparing apples and oranges, or in this case, lemons and oranges. The original calculation was made on orange juice, and juice alone - no pulp, rind, pith, or any of those junk. Secondly, if you read...

    Thoughts? (Trace and recipie)

What temperature do you soap? Palm oil usually will help your soap trace faster. I have not used lard before (only tallow). While lard may not trace as quickly as palm, 44% lard and 25% coconut will still give you a nice, hard bar once the soap is saponified and cured. Ir your soap "batter"...

What kind of mold do u prefer?

The box for a roll of freezer paper makes about the same size bar as velveeta. And you get many more bars out of it.

    WSP Bitter Almond

Personally I really like it! Used about 3.5% in a goat milk soap alone. No discoloration, no acceleration. Initially it was a very intense amaretto (liqueur) type of smell, after a few months it fades to a mild scent. Originally I wanted to blend it with chocolate (in a soap with 35% cocoa...

Keep Your Superfat Up when Using Orange Juice

Thank you all! I am safely back on terra firma. :-P @ Dorado, since your oranges are very ripe, I would assume even replacing all the water with juice, it will only up your superfat 1 to 1.5%. @ Green Soap, found another table (go to table 1 of the article) with info for lemon and lime...

Keep Your Superfat Up when Using Orange Juice

I have seen glancing through a lot of discussions on using citrus (juices) in soap and some extremely low superfat numbers used. Since I am sitting at the airport doing nothing, I did some quick calculations, mainly for my own entertainment, but thought I would share the results. If it sounds...

    Palm/Coconut Free Soap

You might want to go through these first then: http://teachsoap.com/cold-process-soap/ Someone else suggested using a water discount earlier, but if this is your first batch ever AND you are a bit nervous, I would use the full amount unless you are comfortable with using less. Not doing a...

    Bartering items for soaps

I have been bartering soap for about 6 months. Sometimes as simple as having my neighbor help carry all my soap making supplies from storage to my kitchen and back, sometimes I trade soap for homegrown produce such as lavender, lemon balm, raspberries, etc. (because of my travel schedule, there...

    Hello from Brazil!

    Help, got ash.

Some people mist the surface with rubbing alcohol. I am too lazy to do so but find that if I minimize contact between the surface of the soap and air after I pour (such as covering the top with plastic wrap/freezer paper), I get less ash.

    New - first batch

Michael's sells jasmine essential oil?! I suspect it is probably fragrance oil ... It would help to know the weight of oils (instead of just percentages) and lye and the amount of fragrance oil you used. Sometimes fragrance oils from craft stores are more geared towards melt and pour soap and...

My recipe traces to fast!! Help with swirling!

What temperatures do you soap? If you soap cooler, it will in generally slow down the trace. Also, are you using any essential/fragrance oils? Some of them tend to accelerate trace, to the point of seizing.

    Laundry powder

I have used a 5% superfat soap (perfectly fine soap, but I used some FO sample I got for free with an order - yuck) and have not had any problem with rancid or dirty clothing. Also, thank goodness the scent does not linger! Guess if someone is specifically making soap for laundry, 0%...
