You get what you pay for!

has anyone tried to make their own EO's? Is it difficult? expensive? Sounds like a potential answer to some of the issues in this thread.

What does your soap cost to make?

RE: Why am I asking. I have been experimenting with felting melt and pour for a while. I have what I think is a good product at a good price. I have a friend who is a very accomplished artist who also does marketing/branding/etc and makes a good living doing that. He has a killer idea, and...

What does your soap cost to make?

From what I've been able to dig up... it sounds like buying in fairly large quantity (200+ pounds in the oils) would offset the cost increases since most of the posts in this thread? Large volume buying of the inexpensive oils might get the price under $1/bar? Large volumes of higher priced...

What does your soap cost to make?

I just found this thread and am interested in current costs. It looks like the 2010 costs were between $.75 and $1.50. Can anyone share current costs?

    Felted soap

Wow. Is this a great site, or what? THANKS SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!! I have NO idea where to start to look for this info... come here, invest 1 minute of my time to type a question, wait two hours and WHA-LA... exactly what I NEED. Thanks again.

    Felted soap

I've been felting soap for a while. My highlights have always consisted simply of different colored wools on top the white base felt. I was looking around on ETSY, and see that people are putting intricate designs... flowers and animals... on felted soap. Does anyone know how they do that?

    Felted M&P

I hope to wholesale felted M&P. One setback I've had is that after a while, lather doesn't come easily through the felt. (I assume this is because some moisture is lost because of the felt?) Anyway, I put a small amount of liquid hand soap into the melt with the scent with VERY good results...

    Accurate measures

Thanks so much to you all. I have a super accurate gem scale I can use. But I still think I'll at least double the volume. Someone made a great point about FO's sticking to the measuring devise. At the tiny volumes I was contemplating, I think that could screw me up.

    Accurate measures

Thanks. Do you use a pipette pump? They look like they'd be handy, but never seen one.

    Accurate measures

I've heard weight, not volume for measuring FO's. True? I'm doing small quantities, and am nervous about measuring .21 ounces. Is there a good way to do that small of a weight? I was thinking of weighing the right amount, then marking that on a pipette, and then going by volume? Anyone...

    Lumps in M&P

Sometimes I do. Depends on how lumpy it is. I am reasonably sure that overcooking causes bubbles, so I want to get it as tight as possible. The "best" from my perspective would be one tiny lump in each bar. And "doing it right" was the reason I asked the question. The less time in the...

    Lumps in M&P

LSG: That's how I do it. But if there are just a few lumps, I don't bother putting it back. Badger... right you are... didn't think of that, since I'm not using colors now. Thanks.

    Lumps in M&P

I try to microwave M&P as little as I can and still get the job done. I sometimes see lumps when I'm pouring. Question: how much does it matter? The only negative I can think of is when I'm using fragrances. The lumps don't have them, and the surrounding base has a very slightly higher...

    Those potent fragrence oils

I'm sorry... I'm not sure what you are asking. I wasn't worried about the powerful fragrance straight out of the bottle... I suspected that would be the case. It was the fact that the fragrance SEEMED (I was wrong) strong enough to eat through plastic. What I have done with the 6 fragrances I...

    Soap Batch - Bubbles?

I had bubbles my first few batches. Never since. I didn't "try" to get rid of them, they just stopped happening. I've been doing exactly the same thing for a while now... same size batch, same time in the microwave. When I pull the measuring cup out microwave, sometimes there is a tiny bit...

    Those potent fragrence oils

measuring Yeah... my plan is to use my gem scale to get a very accurate weight, then pour THAT into a glass test tube (?? is that best for, say, 6 -8 bars??) and mark put a mark on the test tube so I don't have to weigh them each time.

    Those potent fragrence oils

Another thank-you I can't thank you enough for your answer. I was suffering from "narrow perspective." ("You see what that water did to that salt? I'm not going to let water get anywhere NEAR my body!") I bet those beakers I threw away were just discolored by the oil that resisted coming...

    Those potent fragrence oils

Thanks ... I had forgotten that I needed to do weight, not volume. So... you mentioned putting the oil on cotten and letting it dry. Does it lose what I consider to be its obnoxious qualities (IE: Acting like an acid that is near impossible to remove, overpowering aroma) when it dries?

    Those potent fragrence oils

I bought 6 fragrance oils from Crafter's Choice, and just used them for the first time. I had no idea they were so strong, so bought some spiffy plastic beakers to measure them with. WRONG. Quickly ate the paint right off the beakers (so now there are no incriment markers on the beakers) and...

    cleaning your utensils

This will sound a bit goofy RE: Pyrex measuring cups. I make sure that I tip the cup before the M&P hardens. This usually assures that there is at least one place where there is 1/4" (or something) of soap when it hardens. I then use my fingernails to start peeling the soap off of that...
