A dog Ate the Soap...Oh No!

Our Lab loves my soap, have to keep it up or he munches on it. Shouldn't be surprised I guess, it is tallow based and usually smells so good! It has not seemed to do him any harm, even after most of a bar!

Can I use cow's Milk Butter in soap?

Yogurt works, makes nice soap. Butter makes stinky soap, check out ghee, it is supposed to work but I have never tried it.

Hubby shot it just 6 weeks after finishing Chemo and Radiation treatments for small cell lung cancer! It was his dream to be able to hunt one more time and hunt he did! He is an avid and conscientious hunter, in the last 9 years he has taken 9 shots and has taken 9 nice bucks. This one is the...

Single best piece of advice for a newbies soaper?

The things I wish I knew for my first few batches: Get a REALLY good scale, Measure carefully, Figure out the differences between emulsification and degrees of trace, Study things that cause accelleration like FOs or other additives. Stick with small batches and few oils at first. Lots of adds...

Wait!!! The older the soap the easier it will come out, try again tomorrow...take it out of the freezer, wait 15 min for some condensation, tap all around the pipe, mine slide right out, if not wait another day repeat. I no longer wear myself out pounding on soap.LOL

    Can't figure

5% castor could help you out, it is probable the SF holding back the bubbles like irishlass said.

    ASH!

Steam works great to remove ash. I have used a steam iron (carefully!) 91% alchohol sprayed after pour and again after a few hours has reduced ash on soaps prone to it. I seem to get ash on soaps made with violet ultra marine every time.

Whats your Favorite Base Oil or Base Oil Blend

Beef tallow, absolute favorite! Hard bar, feels great, lovely lather when 4-5% castor is in the recipe. Cost is low if you can source the fat and render it. Suet or "kidney fat" is the best, cleaner to render. Trimmings will work. Rendering is easy, lots of "how to" on the net. I render...

Can I use tracing paper instead of freezer paper for my cp

If you are thinking of using the "rice paper" type of tracing paper. NO! It will stick to the soap. You need to use something that has a coating like freezer paper has, a plastic like or waxy coating that has non stick properties. I use freezer paper, works great. I have used parchment paper(for...

    a few questions

You can try a health food store for Essential Oils, they may have some for fragrance. The refrigerator has to be open, air must circulate for the soap to dry/cure. Properly made soap needs no preservatives. I have soap that my great Grand Mother made in 1956. Fabulous soap, hows that for...

Top 2 Oils to Keep on Hand...

Castor is usually a small % of oils used, it adds lather/bubbles @ 5 to 8 %. Too much castor = soft bar.

Top 2 Oils to Keep on Hand...

I MUST have tallow and castor oil. I panic if either is low. I soap mostly tallow blend soaps because it makes an awesome soap and we raise beef, I render my own. Must have scents are Sweetgrass, Almond and lemongrass. Have lots more but those are the most requested. Must have adds are...
