How to use Mimosa hostilis in soap?

Earlene, thanks for this great response! I appreciate your taking the time to be so comprehensive. Many hearts to you. The soap my friend used was itself handmade, she believes—so no label from which to backengineer a recipe, sadly. One of the reasons I don’t work with herbal or root infusions...

How to use Mimosa hostilis in soap?

Hello there. A friend has requested a soap with mimosa hostilis root bark (jurema, tepezacohuite) in it. I’ve been making soap since 2012, but I don’t work often with herbs or herbal infusions in soap. Has anyone worked with this additive in soap before, and what is the best way to use it? I’ve...

    Bath bomb disaster

Then I bet it was the fineness of the powder. Sounds like you can still use it, though--just experiment with your formula. Shea butter sounds very luxurious.

    Bath bomb disaster

I'm a wee bit obsessive, so I had to search for more info on monohydrate CA. Where did you purchase the monohydrate you've used in the past? The only source I've found so far for Monohydrate Citric acid says that they only sell to schools and businesses. The MSDS (linked here...

    Bath bomb disaster

Hmm. The MSDS linked on the Soap Kitchen website says that your product is water soluble: http://www.thesoapkitchen.co.uk/acatalog/PDF_MSDS_Citric_Acid_Anhydrous.pdf (see the paragraph headed Ecological Information) "Anhydrous" means that the product contains no water, not that it won't...

Now I'm curious--what is anhydrous citric acid used for? I've never even heard of it.

    Bath bomb disaster

Wow. I've had that happen before, but not because of the type of citric acid (didn't know there was more than one type, as a matter of fact. Yay! I learned something!). Instead, it was due to the dead sea salts I used. Sucked moisture right out of the air and bloomed like a great big flower of...

Magnesium stearate (lip balm) separation anxiety

That's interesting. Didn't see anything on sodium stearate when I searched on google or looked at my usual supplier websites, but that's not necessarily significant. Think I'll post a question on one of my favorite sites, Point of Interest. Will check back in and let you know what I find out.

How should I list Shea butter in ingredients?

Just linking back to the sticky (which I missed earlier) that covers most of this stuff: http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showthread.php?t=3583

How should I list Shea butter in ingredients?

Well, humor aside, it appears that soap is not regulated by the FDA, if I'm correctly reading this paragraph from the excerpt I posted above: "How FDA defines "soap" Not every product marketed as soap meets FDA's definition of the term. FDA interprets the term "soap" to apply only when the...

How should I list Shea butter in ingredients?

I found this: http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/cold-process-soap/how-to-label-cold-process-soap/ "Soap is a special case when it comes to labeling. The FDA does not require ingredient labeling for soap. That’s right! Nothing." Hmm. From the FDA website: "And what if it's...

How should I list Shea butter in ingredients?

Hey there; I have a neem soap with hemp and Shea butter. I list my ingredients in the following manner: Saponified coconut oil, olive oil, neem oil, shea butter... Blah blah, etc. I used to list sodium hydroxide as an ingredient but one of my favorite customers asked me whether it was...

Magnesium stearate (lip balm) separation anxiety

Apparently, the softening is not unusual with MS. The original formula, with MS listed as an ingredient, came from the Humblebee and Me website. I asked the website owner if she'd noticed something similar with the lipsticks she makes, and she said that it was typical. That's when I looked back...

    Lye burn and the aftermath...

Oh, WOW. I am so sorry this happened to you! I am guilty of all of the above-mentioned safety infractions, and possibly more. Flip-flops instead of regular shoes, tank tops (summer in Texas, y'all) instead of sleeves, taking off my gloves when I'm trying to maneuver a slightly slippery pot...

Magnesium stearate (lip balm) separation anxiety

Is anyone out there working with magnesium stearate in lip balms or other products? I ask because my balms are behaving rather strangely. I've been working on a tinted lip balm. My balm base is satisfactory to me, (although it could be a little firmer, possibly). My main concern was color...

Wow, that sounds like exactly what I want. Now I can hardly wait for this weekend, when I can get my test kitchen back up and running!

Yeah, I guess I wasn't very clear. Sorry about that. But thank you very much for the suggestions!

Improving stability and color adhesion in tinted lip balm with candelilla?

Amusingly enough, I had just found that MMS recipe when I read your post. I think I will make a small batch with 8% candelilla and see how it feels/looks. It's reassuring to hear your description of the feel--for some reason, I assumed the plant waxes would make for a "waxier" feeling product.
