    Need rebatching advice

Hi: I made two batches of soap yesterday morning. They both have 280 ounces of oils in them. One of them still has lye water around the sides of the mold and the other one seemed to separate and has unincorporated fragrance oils. The latter one seemed to trace in about ten seconds - no I...

    Saddle Soap?

Does anyone have a nice recipe for saddle soap? I've seen some that need castile soap flakes - it sounds like you rebatch to make saddle soap. Are there any CP recipes for saddle soap? Thanks a bunch!

    Warm Process Soap?

I'm sitting here studying HP soap. I'm wondering if there is a process between CP and HP. Indulge me... What if I mixed oils and lye/water at, I don't know, 160 degrees F. Lets not put in colors or fragrances as yet. Mix them up until they trace. Lets say the batter is now, what, 155...

    Transfer of fragrance?

If I want to put a scent into a bar of soap and have that scent linger on the skin of someone who uses it, is there any certain technique that will increase the probability that the scent will transfer in use? The uses are many - I could make a bar of soap that leaves the bathing deer hunter...

    Lemon Juice in soap-making?

I saw a recipe for soap that uses lemon juice. Has anyone tried to use lemon juice? I would think the acidity of the lemon juice would preclude its use as a solvent for the lye. I would think lemon juice has too little scent to be an effective addition at trace time. Thoughts?

How do they know the SAP values?

I know this is a strange question. Does anyone know how a chemist might determine the SAP values (for NaOH) of a mystery vegetable/animal oil sample? I found ASTM D5558 - 95(2011) Standard Test Method for Determination of the Saponification Value of Fats and Oils on the web, but they want...

    Floating Soap?

I know Ivory bar soap is made by mixing a lot of air into the soap - at trace time and beyond, I presume. Do you have any thoughts on how I might create a physically lighter bar by whipping air into the soap? I thought of putting it in a stand mixer and just let it go (walk away, as the...

    In Praise of Water Discounting

I've got two whole batches of soap under my belt, so to say. The first was 75% olive oil. The recipe came from an online calculator that has a water:lye ratio of nearly 3:1. I didn't have a stick blender (start giggling now) so I took a paint mixer (round steel thing that goes in a 5 gallon...
