No lard or palm standard recipe?

HelloI like lard but there's a stigma against it for some reason, even with people who aren't vegetarian. Then I don't like palm either because of the environmental problems with it. Ecological kind is so expensive, too. Here's what I do have on hand: coconut oil castor oil shea...

    Need color ideas

I have candle science's Oakmoss and Amber. I wonder if red clay or Rhassoul clay (soft tan color) would work. I think it does discolor kind of gold, though and I was planning to add a little goats' milk.

Temptation calls (sale at Peak's now)

Just got the email a little earlier. Sometimes it's not even the money, it's the time. Wish I didn't have to sleep!

Standard recipe I hope I didn't post before but tweaked some

Nevermind It is the same recipe practically I posted before. Only thing that might change it a little is refined shea butter not unrefined which is softer. I trust Soapcalc and think it's fine to try again with it.

Do you prefer gell and why only milk soaps get ungelled

I had to gell a small almond batch I did because it wanted it that way, there was no stopping it. Am I correct in thinking it produces a harder bar? The recipe just subbed a small amount of almond oil instead of some of the olive and that is the only difference between it and my other soaps...

What to set silicone soaps on for oven

What to set silicone soaps on for oven (solved!) I worry about anything aluminum so would a stainless steel cookie sheet be the right thing?

Are you able to price your soaps what they're really worth?

I've been looking online and shopping and I have the feeling handmade soap is underpriced in a lot of cases. I looked on ebay at Christmas and saw someone's soap at $.99 each like they were just desperate to sell it at any price. I see that there's a lot of competition. Many things are sold...

    A realistic ginger?

Is there a fragrance oil that smells like either fresh ginger or at least the spice? So many seem to be Ginger Something or a blend and I don't know if I want that. Although with lemongrass might be a nice pairing.

    Morphing

What is it that causes this in fragrance oils? Milk (all dairy kinds) Coconut Milk Gelling Does salt do it too? Some clays (I experienced this from French green clay and Rosemary and Lavender essential oils plus buttermilk as one half the liquid. There was no other explanation because the...

    Understanding mold capacity

I know about adding up the dimensions of your mold and multiplying it by .40 but does the answer take into consideration your 1 oz per pd of scent and teaspoons of clay or oatmeal or what ever additives?

Bars made with new mold get a D-

I made two bars on Saturday and poured them into my new silcone Crafters Choice mold. This was a hard recipe with some salt and milk. 1 The scent morphed from the goat milk. This such a crap shoot with scents. I wish there was clear information that certain scents can't handle milk. 2 The...

what is okay for mixing lye in besides steel?

I've read about not to use glass no matter how thick but it seems like plastic might melt from the heat. I have heatproof spatulas and could someone suggest a brand of bowls that are heatproof? I've just been using a stainless steel pot with a handle but would like to have an alternate lye...

Salt bar recipe without all the salt?

I'm going to try the Youtube recipe again (coconut, olive, shea butter) but I don't want to add 75% salt to the ratio of oils. What if I just want to add a couple of ounces of sea salt? I'm also going to add 2-3 tablespoons of half and half just to see how the scent likes milk (or not). So...

Can soap rice or curdle in the mold?

Say if you poured the soap and it looked fine and then did gell and there were little cream colored dots in all the bars. In this case it was cinnamon leaf essential oil that wouldn't let me no-gell it. I think between the spice scent and the milk and the gell that the goat milk must have...

    Pressure to soap!

I bought some new supplies but I'm not soaping them. I dont for sure know why. I worry about scents left in plastic but I keep telling myself they'll be soaped in no time and out of their 1 oz bottles. I think tomorrow I'll do a batch with a scent I really like that recently arrived. Is...

    rose clay questions

I got some from Oregon Trails and really liked it. Then I bought some rose clay from WSP and it's a totally different color. Really almost a coral pink. The OT's one does not morph in color from goat milk like most red and pink colorants. Do any pink or rose clays that you've come across do...

Most fragrances need 1 oz per pd oils?

I've never been able to really smell scents in cold process soap at .5. I'm always going to 1 oz per pd except for almond. But even almond does fade and so I've gone with .8 for it. Sometimes you hear that higher temps will burn off the scent or gell will or certain clays can absorb it. I...

    Peak's melt and pour bases

Is the low sweat always the best way to go? I don't live in a humid climate or anything though. I had no idea Peaks had so many bases. I guess I'd like the most wholesome with good additives. I've never know what makes a base be able to suspend things you add. Wax maybe?

    Peak's most recent sale

There are some fragrances I'm really interested in: Almond Pastries, Sweet Pea, Coconut Lime Verbena, Honeysuckle, Warm Vanilla Sugar are just a few. I'm just not sure about the Coconut Milk though because it sounds like it smells good but doesn't really excell in cold process soaps. The...

Individual silicone molds for regular CP dependable?

I would really prefer not to add sodium lactate and it's saying on the Brambleberry page that this is maybe a good idea for getting your soap to harden and come out cleanly. I already know I want them for salt bars and I think beeswax and cocoa butter soaps would do great with the individual...
