Cheap vs. Steep - soap making ingredients

Chalk up another victory for the lardinators!!

    Sequestering

Good to hear! How much soap:water was the final dilution? 1:3? 1:4?

Looks great! Nice design on the top.

Do you buy ingredients or supplies from odd or unexpected places?

I've been able to find beef tallow for 35 cents an oz on Amazon. But it comes in a narrow-necked HDPE jug which is slightly painful. Why do you freeze your cocoa butter wafers? I just wish Smart and Final was on the East Coast! Know any East Coast sources of tallow shortening? How much is...

    Oils Question

You can also get a sense of what contributions different oils make by their inclusion in the various parameters of a soap calculator. Check out the table on this page:SoapCalc soap qualities

    Sequestering

I too just made my first batch of liquid soap (70% olive oil, 20% coconut oil, 10% castor oil; 1% superfat, 33.3% KOH concentration), but it is slightly cloudy on dilution (3 parts water to 1 part soap paste), even though it was perfectly clear on the clarity test (1 g soap paste in 99 g...

    Oils Question

You can also think of the different oils as belonging to different "families" of fatty acids. These families are based on which fatty acid predominates in each oil. Here are some examples of different fatty acid families: Oleic (olive, avocado, rice bran, peanut) Palmitic (palm, tallow, lard)...

    Questions about Liquid Soap

Thank you for this very informative post. Why do you say that clarity test or phenolphthalein drops are not necessary with dual lye LS? Can you clarify what you mean by finding the optimum dilution rate by the FAs used? Do you mean estimate the final dilution rate by estimating using the rule...

    Electric blanket to homogenize oils?

I received my oils in HDPE jugs with a narrow spout and screw cap. Can you please go into a little bit more detail about how you microwave the oils to melt them (I have beef tallow, lard, coconut, and cocoa butter to melt). Do you do it in short bursts and remove the cap from the jug? I think...

    Storing liquid soap "paste"

Are there any advantages in terms of preservation or otherwise to storing undiluted liquid soap "paste" in an airtight container for dilution at a later time? If so, how do you store your liquid soap paste? Does refrigeration help/is it necessary? Thanks again.

    Electric blanket to homogenize oils?

Thank you. Just so I understand, does this mean that once the oil is heated to 150F, it is "done" and ready for soaping, and that the stearic acid "beads" that lead to stearic spots won't somehow reform during the cooling process to 90F?

    Electric blanket to homogenize oils?

Thank you for this advice. Do the oils I mentioned (beef tallow, lard, cocoa butter, coconut 76 degree) need to be homogenized, like palm oil does, or is it OK to just scoop some off the top or pour some when they are partially melted?

    Electric blanket to homogenize oils?

I was planning to use an electric blanket to gently melt my solid oils (tallow, lard, cocoa butter, coconut 76 degree). They are in 1 gallon containers. Anyone have experience with this method for small batches of oil? Will the amount of heat from an electric blanket degrade the oils if I do it...

    Questions about Liquid Soap

Thanks for the response. So, to clarify your point in #4, if you were using dual lye, and wanted a liquid:lye ratio of 3:1, and the recipe called for 98.15 g total of KOH and NaOH, you would combine 98.15 g KOH+NaOH with 98.15 g water (1:1). Then add 98.15 x 2 = 196.3 of glycerin to your oils...

    Questions about Liquid Soap

Hi all! Some questions about liquid soap. I'm coming from a cold process solid soap background. 1.) Previous threads on this forum suggest dual/hybrid lye does not really have an effect on the final thickness of liquid soap. However, in this YouTube video, the soapmaker uses dual/hybrid lye...

    Tallow (beef) recipe feedback please!!

Thank you for this recipe. I will take your advice and make the first test batch using 500g total oil weight and use a Pringles can instead of the original higher number in the recipes I posted above (which is for a 5 lb log mold). What percentages of tallow and lard do you recommend when using...

    Tallow (beef) recipe feedback please!!

Sorry, but I don't see the recipe in your post. Could you repost the recipe? Thank you! Thank you for the idea! I will consider substituting rice bran oil for the olive oil.

    Tallow (beef) recipe feedback please!!

Hi all, I'm looking for feedback on the following recipe using beef tallow, as I haven't used tallow before. I lowered the Coconut Oil from another version of this recipe to lower cleansing to 16. Any suggestions? Thank you! Recipe Oils, Fats and Waxes Oil % Grams Castor Oil 5 76.2...
