    Grams vs. Ounces

Scales, in general, have a microcontroller to accurately add the data coming from 1 or more pressure sensors (usually 3 or 4). That data is converted within the microcontroller to data that is then displayed externally. Almost all scales are made somewhere other than the US. Therefore, most...

What is the weirdest thing you've put in soap ?

I agree. Simply steeping the grounds is insufficient to make the coffee soap I'm producing. However, I place the espresso ground coffee in a crock pot with the Olive Oil on medium (180 degree) heat for about 4 hours. The coffee is softened and the oil is infused with all the color, fragrance...

What type of scent do you think sells best?

I sell 15+ EO, scent free, and coffee soaps. They all have the same basic Olive Oil, Palm Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, and Shea Butter formula. The biggest seller, year round, is Lavender. Next is Sweet Orange, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree w/Charcoal, Turmeric w/Turmeric Powder...

What is the weirdest thing you've put in soap ?

I haven't tried using ground coffee that has been used to make regular (drinkable) coffee before. Instead, I brew the coffee in the olive oil first. Then mix it into the other oils before adding the lye. Also, you're absolutely right about not using it on the most delicate bits.

What is the weirdest thing you've put in soap ?

I make a coffee soap. First batch went in the trash because I used regular ground coffee. It was like 80 grit sandpaper. Now I use espresso ground coffee with no issues and lots of positive feedback from customers (and my wife).

    What's your personal soundtrack today?

That shows just how different people can be. If I were in your house, I'd be so tense, I'd never be able to get anything done or even sleep! I'll bet if you were in my house, you would feel very similar. I love that we each do what works for us. I wish more people could find their "happy place"...

    What's your personal soundtrack today?

Listening to my Steely Dan channel on Pandora while I package a batch of coffee soap, my least favorite part of soap making, and make a batch of turmeric soap.

Has anybody used peanut oil for CP soap?

I definitely understand. I use poly-tubing for my molds and all other equipment is stainless and is thoroughly cleaned.

Has anybody used peanut oil for CP soap?

Allergies are the primary reason I would not sell this soap as a "Zufall Soap Company" product. This soap would only be sold wholesale to the peanut roasting company owned by my old classmate.

Has anybody used peanut oil for CP soap?

    1. I'll have to look at my linoleic + linolenic total. 2. Unfortunately, I can't use ROE due to my epilepsy but sodium citrate or sodium gluconate is something I'll try. 3. The short shelf life is what I'm trying to avoid. 4. I use glassine bags to package the soap so direct sunlight is a...

Has anybody used peanut oil for CP soap?

I make vegan CP soap that I sell at farmers markets and festivals (30-80 bars/week) and a few small stores (10-30 bars/week). I recently got a request from an old friend from HS (40 years ago!) who has a roasted peanut business. He wants a peanut oil soap that would be private labeled for his...

Where do you buy your bulk oils?

I buy all my EO from New Directions Aromatics. I know they're Canadian but I've had issues with quality or consistency from every US source I've tried. I get my oils and Shea butter from The Chemistry Store in Columbia, SC. I buy sodium hydroxide from Duda Energy.

Do sticker labels stick to soap?

I usually use a glassine bag with a rectangular front and back label. However, I have used Avery 1.5" x 7" Rectangle Custom Labels (Template - Presta™ 94280) for a customer that wanted custom packaging. The long label wraps completely around the soap and sticks very well to itself.

    Hello from Concord, NC

My name is Don Zufall and I have been making soap for 5 years. Almost 3 years ago I decided to turn it into a business, with my daughter. I initially got into soap making because of my lovely wife's many allergies and the increasing issues I have had with my epilepsy. As all of you know, most...
