    Wood ash lye soap

Right on the money. Once you determine a desirable specific gravity for your lye solution you'll be on your way to having a dependable recipe. Of course, once you introduce new oils into the mix, you'll have to experiment all over again. And as far as salting for a hard bar. Keep in mind...

    Wood ash lye soap

I've done a bit of research on the topic but I don't have the resources to try making soap this way yet so I'll pass along a couple things I was going to try. The first and most important being using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity for the lye water. You can get these at brewing...

    Making Ash (Lye) Water

To the original poster. I've done quite a bit of research on this as well and Donnie has hit on the two biggest issues. I don't have the resources to try making soap this way yet so I'll pass along a couple things I was going to try. The first and most important being using a hydrometer...

IanT, This is the most detailed stuff I've seen yet... http://www.frontierfreedom.com/index.ph ... &Itemid=57 This fellow seems to get a hard bar using nothing but tallow and wood-ash lye. Though he doesn't claim to be successful every time. I figure if I take good notes, once I've...

Still digging on this. Sounds like the key to getting a hard bar may be adding the salt. That said, I'd rather not use HP as it sounds like the glycerine separates out. Here's my eventual goal. A hard bar made from tallow and wood ash lye. If I'm right, salt will make it hard, honey will make...

    low light flower

I think we're in the minority 'round here. I keep getting asked, "why don't you just use NaOH?" Or "You should use EOs!" Mint is notorious for taking over any planter (but it is a thristy devil). To be honest, I pass a lot of lavendar plants when I take my dogs for their walk... So... You...

    Last one, Ash Lye

Anyone had much luck making hard CP soap with KoH (potassium hydroxide)? And/or does anyone have a list of fats that work well with KoH? I know a lot of people say you'll only get a soft soap, but I also know people made good hard soap with it for a few hundred years.

Making infused oils for CP soap making

I used whole tangerine peel in my last batch, big mistake. No amount of EO could match the smell of the pith. So! Zest: OK. Whole peel: No.

    Scenting Curing Bars

Is there any way to add scent to bars that have already been curing for a bit? I used Crisco as my base and to be honest I smell like a croisant after I take shower.

    Coffee Soap

Would like to know more about your successes using infused oils to scent your soaps. I want to be able to make nice-smelling soaps using only things from the backyard (tallow, ashes, herbs).

    unattached but happy

I may look into a steam distiller some day, but at this point I'd really like to figure out how to get the strongest fragrance just using the herbs themselves. Infused oil? Infused water? Dried? Fresh? If I ever get really ambitious (read: wealthy) I'd also like to figure out how to press...
