    DOS in soap

You might be right! I have not tried this recipe with single lavender EO, but a blend of Lavender + Peppermint EO. I guess in the future, I'll avoid both in cold process.

Smell from heat sealer to seal opening of shrink wrap bag (before using heat gun)

The heating element/heating strip is quite clean as I just started using it. In the past, I have been using cling wrap since most of my soaps were melt and pour so i didn't want to risk it with heat guns. However in the past year, I've dabbed alot more into cold process. I'll look around the...

    DOS in soap

Post 4-month update: I've not experienced DOS since switching to a single essential oil (Cedarwood)! Loving my coffee soap scrubs till now from the big batch. I highly suspect that Peppermint EO was the culprit.

Smell from heat sealer to seal opening of shrink wrap bag (before using heat gun)

Thank you! I guess either my shrink wrap or heater are not of good quality. Have made multiple adjustments but either it doesn't fully seal, or seals completely with a burning smell. Time for an upgrade!

Smell from heat sealer to seal opening of shrink wrap bag (before using heat gun)

Hi everyone! I’ve been using cling wrap to wrap my soaps since forever, but it can be extremely time consuming! Hence, I purchased some shrink wrap bags (with one opening), a heat sealer and a heat gun. After placing the soap inside the shrink wrap bag, I will use a heat sealer to seal the...

    DOS in soap

Oh I have never heard of lavender seed extract, will definitely look it up! I have made the batches above and keeping fingers crossed that there’s no DOS coming up in a month. I have previously used Shea Butter but in a different formula and didn’t experience DOS. However, I didn’t use lavender...

    DOS in soap

I see, I will not tweak the amount of Sweet Almond oil then. I live in Singapore (very hot and humid) and will reduce SF to 2% or less. Also, i've read somewhere that Lavender and mint essential oils often causes DOS - will be switching to a Cedarwood essential oil then. Yes, the oils i'm using...

    DOS in soap

Nope, I'm using plastic in a dehumidified and cool room. I will try to make a smaller batch with the following adjustments: - Lowering % of sweet almond oil from 10% to 5% - Increase % of coconut oil from 27.5% to 32.5% - Lowering water to lye ratio from the current 2.4 to 2.0 - Lowering...

    DOS in soap

My soaps have been getting DOS but I’m not sure what’s the trigger. I’m living in a hot and humid evironment, but the soaps will be cured in a cool and dark room with a dehumidifier. Is there any problem with this palm-free CP recipe, or could it be done to the EOs? (I often use Nowfoods...

Making low sweat melt and pour from scratch

Yes, I suspect the remaining % is probably propylene glycol. Will reducing the % of coconut oil and increasing the olive oil and Shea butter % make the mp soap base less harsh?

Making low sweat melt and pour from scratch

Hi there, I tried a new low sweat melt and pour soap base from a supplier and felt that it was too harsh on my skin, probably due to the high amount of coconut oil. This were their ingredient (% is Substance content, not just oils. However, they don't add up to 100%) - Olive oil 20.5% - Coconut...

    Glycerin rivers or soap?

No worries, what you said made sense too! I have made the same design twice and the yellow colour always disappears

    Glycerin rivers or soap?

Thank you for all your advise! I didn’t know that yellow tends to disappear in cold process - it was very vibrant before the gelling phase! I used liquid pigment dispersions - yellow from Aussie Soap Supplies and orange from diff supplier. This is actually my 2nd batch. In the first batch, I...

    Glycerin rivers or soap?

Hi, I am quite new to cold process soap making and sometimes have trouble identifying if the transparent strokes in my soaps are due to glycerin rivers, air bubbles or just not enough colourants. I recently made a 2 layered soap with orange, yellow and white swirls at the bottom, and a pure...

Question on using alternative liquids in cold process soapmaking

Here’s an update of a second tea soap that I’ve made. This time with peach green tea. I lowered the soaping temperature to 30 deg celcius and unfortunately it was still overheated! Might be the scarf I used to wrap it around before putting in the thermal bag. The colour of this tea was darker so...

Question on using alternative liquids in cold process soapmaking

Thank you everyone for your kind explanation and tips! I will be making another tea soap this week. Hopefully it will turn out well too!

Question on using alternative liquids in cold process soapmaking

Ahh so these are glycerin rivers. Perhaps I should’ve waited for it to cool down to 30 deg celcius instead before mixing. Will attempt it again, thank you for the advice!

Question on using alternative liquids in cold process soapmaking

Thank you so much for your advice! I’ve made a 500g batch, soaping it around 35 deg celcius. I’ve wrapped it overnight with a scarf and stored it in a thermal insulation bag. I presume that the saponification process / gel phase happened quite successfully, as the mould became quite warm. I’ve...

Question on using alternative liquids in cold process soapmaking

It’s actually my first time using this recipe and I’ll be replacing the water directly with genmaicha matcha tea. The recipe contains mostly sweet almond oil, but has 17% CO. I will experiment with a small batch at low temperature first, since it is possible that genmaicha has some sugars too...

Question on using alternative liquids in cold process soapmaking

Hi all! I have a question regarding using alternative liquids in soapmaking as im new to the field. Usually, I’ll add the lye water into the oils around 45-50 deg celcius. For alternative liquids, online instructions usually recommend this step to be around 30 deg celcius. I understand that some...
