    Coffee soap drama

I make goat milk and coffee soap fairly often. I freeze the coffee and the milk before adding the lye, and then I add fragrance oil to either lye solution or at trace. I use Midwest Fragrance Company oils, and I’ve used Bramble Berry coffee fragrance oils in the past. Could it be the flash...

    Unusual fragrances

I’m not sure about other fragrance oil companies, but Midwest Fragrance has soaping notes for each scent on their website. They’ll tell you how much cold process soap they used, the percentage of FO, how it behaved, discoloration, and acceleration. They also have links to IFRA usage rate charts...

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Thank you for the detailed information! Reading what you wrote, I feel validated in my methods. Other than the recipe itself, masterbatching, and (up until the last time I soaped), the lye concentration, I make my goat milk soap the same way. The last time I made soap, I melted down enough...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Thank you so much for this info! This helps me a lot. I really appreciate you taking the time to type it all out. I’m going to chat with the studio owner and see how she feels about switching from a M&P class to a HP class.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I met with the owner of the studio yesterday, and she likes my particular soap recipes and looks, and she wants to put my soaps into her retail space within her studio, so she said she’d prefer for me to formulate my own M&P because she seems to think that it will help my CP soaps sell better...

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

UPDATE: I soaped yesterday, and I used a 33% lye concentration instead of water as a percent of oil weight, and the soap moved through trace almost faster than what I could get into the mold. It’s a good thing I decided to not do any intricate colors or designs on that batch because it wouldn’t...

What soapy thing have you done today?

A woman with a local art studio reached out to me about teaching a soap making class, so we met yesterday to discuss how a class would look. I’m a CP soap maker, but we’re going with a MP class, and she wants me to formulate my own MP base. So I’ve already been scouring the MP forum for info on...

    Campfire S’mores goat milk soap

Thank you! I think it does, but I may be biased. 😆

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

That’s good to know! I’ve never used soapmaking friend before. I may have to give that one a try.

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

That’s good information, as well. Thank you! Maybe there’s some happy medium for both reasons stated above in the thread. Sometimes good for HP (depending on the recipe), ease of calculation, or maybe something else entirely. Either way, I’m happy to have a better grasp on lye concentrations...

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Well, that’s true. I agree with you! Sometimes people are just mean, and you can’t do anything about that.

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Thank you for your perspective on this; I appreciate you taking the time and having patience with me. What you’re saying makes sense. And it clarifies what the other woman was trying to say; I wish I could have finished that conversation with her, getting clarification from her, and coming to an...

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Thank you for answering my questions about the lye concentrations - I figured someone had to have tried that out before and knew the answer. That does make sense about the recipes being formulated for HP, since all my recipes have had much lower lye concentrations, and based off the chart that...

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Thank you for responding to my many questions. I appreciate you taking the time. I think I’ve learned a lot! The next time I make soap I’m going to try a 33% lye concentration and see what happens. ♥️

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Thank you for responding and explaining things so well. I really appreciate it. I’m all for going down the rabbit hole on the science of soap. It really fascinates me, and I want to understand as much as I can. Reading all of the more experienced soapers in this forum has been really good for...

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

In the part of the article where it discusses olive oil vs coconut oil, and the article is comparing the way they trace with the same percentage of water based off weight of oils: wouldn’t a 100% OO soap trace differently than a 100% CO soap, regardless of water being a percentage of oil, just...

Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Thank you for your response! I appreciate it. I will definitely read the article you linked. I do soap with frozen goat milk, and I put the oils on top of ice/in the fridge to bring temperatures down. I try to soap with the oils and lye solution as close to each other as I possibly can without...
