2013 Tennessee Soap and Candle Meeting

Hi, everyone! I just wanted to let you know that our Tennessee Soap and Candle Social has been scheduled for this year. It will be held in Nashville at the Scarritt Bennett Center on Saturday May 4th. We have some stellar speakers this year: Lela Barker (of Bella Lucce and Lucky Break...

    Lip Scrub

Had a question about lip scrubs, so I thought I'd revive this thread. Does anyone have advice on how to make a scrub in a lip balm tube? I can't figure out how to get it in there without the sugar dissolving. Thanks!

Absinthe EO and toxicity in soap

I think when you're talking about absinthe essential oil, you're actually talking about wormwood. There's a lot of information out there about this extract, if you want to do some digging. It can be harmful in high doses (as previously stated), and you should definitely be careful when working...

Eos that are close to Jasmine and/or Gardenia

I can't be a lot of help on the waxes, but I've had my eye on them for a while. A friend of mine has used jasmine wax at about 1/3 oz wax per pound of oils. She said it lends a lovely scent. Also, palmarosa is what I call a "fake floral." It's technically a grass, but does have some lovely...

What to do with empty EO bottles

Sometimes I'll use them to pre-mix blends so I don't have to measure once it comes time to put it in my soap. I also use the small ones to use as gifts for friends. I'll put a little lavender or other eo in one and give them to friends who have oil burners with a nice little card explaining...

What causes ashy tops? Do people care ??

Do you gel? When I don't gel my soaps I notice the ash is a lot worse. I lay a silicone baking mat (wax paper works too) on top of the soaps while they gel and harden. That seems to work.

    How do you know if...

I would like to add one thing regarding environmental impact. While what has been said can hold true for oils such as florals, I feel that other eos don't. For example, citrus eos are made from the peels of citrus fruits. I doubt that waste would (or could) be used in any other way. Citrus eos...

    How do you know if...

Most of the medicinal or therapeutic affects of eos get killed by the lye monster. And since soap is a wash off product, a lot of the eo benefits go down the drain. That being said, I usually use about .5 oz per pound of oil in my recipes. This is for cp. Not sure what the ratio should be...

Is there an app for that?

How in the world did I miss Soap Calc?!? Thanks!

Is there an app for that?

Just wondering if anyone out there is using an iphone app for soapmaking (or candlemaking or essential oils) that they're fond of. I can't seem to find any interesting ones thumbing through the app store, but there HAS to be some out there, right? Any suggestions or recommendations?

    Prices of Essential Oils

If you're going to be ordering a lot, www.theperfumery.com has great quality oils. They used to be Essential Oil University but changed hands last year. Now they have pretty high annual minimums. I also really like www.NewDirectionsAromatics.com Switching to all essential oils can be a bit...

    Looking for some natural scents

As far as scents, I use cooking spice scents like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, etc. for soaps like pumpkin and beer. You can play up the "pumpkin pie" aspect or the spices often used in beermaking (orange, lemon, vanilla oleoresin, and cedarwood would go well, too, I think).

    Cumin Oleoresin

Just wondering if anyone has experience using cumin oleoresin in their soaps. Any suggestions on scent blends?

Where can I get recycled plastic lip balm tubes?

I've been ordering them from MMS, but the last few batches have had a large number that just won't twist up. Customer service seems to think it's something I'm doing wrong (although nothing has changed, including my recipe, my equipment, etc.). So I'd like to take my business elsewhere. Anyone...

    Allergic to coconut oil

You can always do a castile bar with 100% OO. I also have a recipe where I use 30% olive oil, 10% castor, and 60% palm (not sure about pko). The lather isn't great, so I add some sugar to the lye solution (or use a fruit juice as a water replacement). It makes a super hard, long lasting bar...

    A Modest Post of Frustration

    A Modest Post of Frustration

I'm so frustrated with myself, and I know that you lot are the only ones that will really understand. So I just wanted to share. I've been spending the last six weeks or so moving into a new house and a new soap making studio. The house has a separate downstairs apartment that is now...
