    Coronavirus

No one wants to look at the facts. 1. You're just as likely to contract and die of ordinary flu as you are coronavirus -- no one is suggesting lockdowns or masks for ordinary flu. 2. A hundred years ago it was demonstrated that cloth masks do not (I repeat, do NOT) slow or stop the spread of...

    Does anybody like unscented soap?

I greatly dislike scents, odors, and smells. I always look for "unscented" when I buy stuff at the store -- regardless of what it happens to be. I only make scented soap for other people. My daughter likes lavender -- lavender reeks worse than most essentials oils. When I make soap for her, my...

    Keeping It Warm

earlene I read the article. Very informative. Very enlightening. Thank you.

    Keeping It Warm

Obsidian I was about to make more Castile soap -- assuming that it would actually/eventually turn into nice soap. That's what everyone says -- you just have to wait for it. That it lathered really well. Was a very high quality soap. And on and on and on. Nothing like pure 100% extra virgin olive...

    Keeping It Warm

DeeAnna OK. Got it. Thanks. That all makes a great deal of sense. Thank you. Just hoping something could be done to reduce the cure time -- apparently, not. Patience is not one of my virtues. I made a bar of Castille soap about ten months ago and it's still not usable. "Hurry up" and "Soap"...

    Keeping It Warm

I'm asking about cure time -- not gel/hardening time? OK. So keeping soap warm after gel/hardening is bad. Alright. Once hardened, then cool dry -- all the way.

    Keeping It Warm

I'm just wanting further clarification…. I've read posts here about wrapping up freshly poured soap to insulate it and keep it warm for the purpose of reducing cure time. That's where I got the idea of keeping it in a warm oven. Certain crystals form more rapidly at certain temperatures...

    Keeping It Warm

If I keep my fresh soap in the oven at about 80 - 100° F will that shorten the cure time? My thoughts are that heat often accelerates chemical processes and heat also drives off moisture. But will it actually reduce the amount of time it takes to cure? Based on responses so far, allow me to...

Does Castile Soap Really Take That Long to Harden?

I super-fat a little maybe 6%, but the 100% coconut oil soap has never seemed harsh or irritating -- even when it's quite young. I already have plans for this weekend, but the weekend after that, I will probably make a couple batches of soap -- so it has more time to cure. I plan to make some...

Does Castile Soap Really Take That Long to Harden?

My 100% coconut oil soap lathers very nicely within a couple of weeks.

Does Castile Soap Really Take That Long to Harden?

Mine did not take a long time to set up -- did it just as quickly as any soap -- however it's NOT soap yet. If you try to use it, it's just slimy and doesn't lather at all. I've been told that it take about a year for it to actually become soap. I'm still waiting.

    Anhydrous Magnesium Sulfate

Epson Salt is the common name of the heptahydrate (seven water) "version" of magnesium sulfate. I started with Epson Salt and baked off all the water. Anhydrous means without water. It makes a really good desiccant because it really loves water -- will pull it right out of the air and won't give...

    Anhydrous Magnesium Sulfate

I'm going to see whether anhydrous magnesium sulfate will work as an accelerant when making gypsum -- nothing to do with soap. Seems like you could add it to your soap batter to accelerate trace -- if you had a batch that seemed like it was never going to get there. I know it can be used to...

    Anhydrous Magnesium Sulfate

I recently made some anhydrous magnesium sulfate (2,070 g) and was wondering what I might do with it besides use it as a desiccant. Is anhydrous magnesium sulfate of any value in soap making?

How much Aloe Vera Gel is too much Aloe Vera Gel

I used to be a math teacher -- so, I'm pretty certain I'm not math phobic. I'll check those out. Thanks.

How much Aloe Vera Gel is too much Aloe Vera Gel

Oh, nice. Thanks. I'll have to look for that in Springfield -- probably on the south side of town.

How much Aloe Vera Gel is too much Aloe Vera Gel

Nothing like that in Springfield MO. But, I'll check again -- maybe I missed it. This is a very backward place -- meat and tatoes is all anyone here eats. No point in a really good fresh produce store. But, again, I'll look again. Still have a gallon of the stuff I bought.

How much Aloe Vera Gel is too much Aloe Vera Gel

My coconut oil soap made with water is older and VERY cured. Maybe that could be the difference.

How much Aloe Vera Gel is too much Aloe Vera Gel

Thank you for the clarification. When I use 50g of Aloe Vera Gel (no water) -- I like the results -- though the final product is not as sudsy as it is when I use water instead. The 37g of lye dissolves well in 50g of Aloe Vera Gel. I live in an area where Aloe Vera will not survive winters. I...

How much Aloe Vera Gel is too much Aloe Vera Gel

I truly appreciate that you provided an answer. However, I'm reasonably certain that I cannot simply use as much as I want and that it will never degrade the finished product. There must be an upper limit. Maybe I should add: I'm not using any water - just Aloe Vera Gel. Has someone tested the...
