Target humidity for the curing area

I'm in central Texas and it's pretty humid here so I have been using a dehumidifier in my soap room for a little over a year. It really is amazing how much water it pulls out of the air. On a good day, I can get the humidity in the mid-30 to low 40% range.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I'm guessing it's just the economy now. With inflation making so many things more expensive, people are cutting back on "extras" like handmade soap that's typically more expensive than what you can buy at the store. I have a lot of loyal local customers and so far in the Spring, none of them...

How long have you been soaping? Or Happy Soap-A-Versary to me

I started in 2019 with melt and pour and then early in 2020 learned how to make hot process. I think it was in 2021 that I switched to cold process and I love it! My signature recipe uses lard, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil, aloe vera juice, powdered goat's milk, and...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I made a couple of batches of what I call my box soaps (I use the rectangular bar molds and they go in kraft paper boxes) a couple of days ago. It's been a really crappy year so far for markets so I have a lot of soap on hand still and don't need to make much more. I'm hoping it will pick up in...

what are your favorite scents from brambleberry?

Ocean Shores has a been a good seller for me. It's a nice unisex scent and it behaved well in CP soap (soaping at around 100 degrees).

    My Fellow Larders

I've never used palm oil. I use a five oil blend with Lard at 30% (the highest percentage of my oils), then Coconut oil, Olive oil, Sunflower oil, and Avocado oil. I also add in powdered goat's milk and colloidal oatmeal as my standard recipe.

    Droopy Silicone mold walls

I have the same issue and I just put a little tape on the edge of the silicone and then tape it down on to the wooden box the mold sits in.

Making bath bombs in high humidity

I'm in a very humid place (central Texas) and I can't make bath bombs either. I switched to making fizzy bath truffles. They have a higher oil content and hold together better (I use an ice cream scoop to shape them) and still fizz like a bath bomb. I let them set for two days in a room with a...

    Holy soap scum Batman!!

I have very hard water and I also have citric acid on hand (I make bath bombs too). So can I use that as a chelator? Is it 1% of the total batch weight or the oil weight? Thanks!

Best Oatmeal, Milk and Honey FO?

I've been using this one from WSP for a couple of years and I really like it. They have two different Oatmeal, Milk & Honey FOs and this is the cheaper version.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Where I live we have very hard water as we have a lot of limestone in the ground (we can't have basements because the ground is too rocky and shifty). I was using distilled water until we had a shortage in the winter and I switched to aloe vera juice.

The Search for an Anti-Acne Soap

I'm 44 and still have breakouts. I have very oily skin but I can keep it mostly under control and only rarely will a pimple get through. FYI, not really soap related, but there are many causes for acne including diet, hormones, and hygiene. Oily skin should only be washed twice a day as...

    Some VERY ugly soap 🤦

I like the pink and green combo - very 1930s!

    DOS due to GM powder?

FYI, when I mix in the powder I take a little of my melted oils in a measuring cup and mix the GM powder in there. Then I pour it through a strainer back into the rest of the oils so I don't get any clumps or bits of powder.

    DOS due to GM powder?

I use the same method as you to mix in the GM powder and I have gotten something similar in one of my batches. All my ingredients were fresh so I wondered if it was just a weird reaction maybe with the FO (Waterlily & Bluebell from WSP).

    Night at the fair

Sounds like a success! We did show craft shows earlier this year and will start up again next month. We mostly do outdoor shows as they are usually single day events and are cheaper than indoor events but we're in Texas and it's too hot in the summer for outdoors. The one we have next month is...

    New Soapmaker- Terrified of Lye

I was scared too but if you are careful it should be fine. I like to use the thick dishwashing gloves that have long cuffs (go almost to my elbows), a long sleeve shirt, a cotton face mask, and safety googles (not the glasses but full goggles). I've have a little bit of splatter hit my goggles...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Lotion Lumps; isn't that a Fergie song? "My lumps, my lumps, My lovely lotion lumps!"

What soapy thing have you done today?

It took a couple of weeks at least before my batch started to smell better so you may want to give it a while.
