Woman critically ill from ingesting lye

In Utah, a woman drank sweet tea contaminated with lye from a drink dispenser. Allegedly, the restaurant worker thought he or she was adding sugar. http://news.msn.com/...mical-laced-tea How could one not notice the chemical reaction, the smell, color, and temperature changes, and the fumes...

    Soap inspired by Swan Lake

My daughter is dancing in Swan Lake and I like to make special soap for all of her productions for her to share with fellow cast members, teachers, and coaches. I have always found white soaps tricky, so this was a nice challenge for me. I was trying for a pattern evocative of water and I'm...

Soaping Misadventures: AKA Check your math!

I am making soap for my mother-in-law's birthday, which is next week. She will be visiting us the following week. I had meant to get to this weeks ago, but it didn't happen. She knows about cure time, so it's OK. She loves lilac. After searching for a good half hour or more for my lilac FO...

    Saved!

I made a batch of soap with pumpkin puree and one of my favorite EO blends - 5x orange, patch, ho wood, cassia and clove. Unfortunately when I cut it, it was covered with white spots and looked diseased. No zap, not air bubbles, and not stearic spots. I suspect it's bits of pumpkin fiber...

    Tiger Stripe

This is my first try at this technique. I'll confess, these are the best two bars that came from the middle of the loaf. I didn't get the timing quite right so the soap started thickening too much before I was done pouring the layers. The bars on the end look more like tiger blobs! Scented...

    Just like I imagined!

For the past several years, my daughter has performed in the Nutcracker and I have been making commemorative soap for her and her fellow cast members, inspired by one of the roles she and her friends have danced. I try to make the soap coordinate with their costumes. This year she was cast in...

    When lye and aluminum mix

My husband asked this morning about the chemical reaction that takes place when lye and aluminum meet. I googled the specifics and found this nifty video which shows the reaction between the two. You get aluminum salts and hydrogen gas - the latter is highly flammable...

    Avocado Soap, cut pics

It overheated slightly so I got a bit of TD crackle. But overall I'm pleased. The olive green is the natural color from the avocado puree. The swirl is TD and green oxide.

Haven't posted in a while, recent soaps

I've been on a more "natural" kick lately: Here is my green tea facial soap colored with sea clay and green tea, with tea tree and lavandin EO Chamomille Pear. Colored with chamomille-infused OO and scented with Daystar's Coconut Pear (it smells mostly like pear) Avocado soap colored...

    Six color swirl

Hi all, I haven't posted photos in a while. This is a soap that I made for an event. The inspiration was a patchwork quilt with six specific colors. I did not have time to make embeds and the finished soaps were small (1 ounce) as they were given out as favors. So I opted for a swirl...

    Help me troubleshoot? Lye crystals

Can anybody offer some guidance? For the first time, I've been zapped! I've had two batches in a row which present the same problem. Both were the same recipe: OO, RBO, PO, CO, castor and cocoa butter, 9% superfat, 34% lye solution. The first had a well-behaving coffee fragrance oil which...

    Two New Soaps

This one I made for my 9 year old daughter according to her vision for the soap. Colored with purple UM, titanium dioxide, and green mica and scented with Peak Blackberry Sage FO and NDA 5x lemon EO. Here's another example of Celine's fabulous swirling technique. I had to make green soap...

    Blue Moon Soap

I decided to try the "Celine Swirl" as featured on Celine Blacow's blog here: http://soaperstar.blogspot.com/ This is my Blue Moon Soap, colored with ultramarines and oxides and scented with anise and bitter almond. Thanks for looking!

    I made tooth soap!

I read a bunch of threads recently on tooth soap (soap buddy, as always, was incredibly helpful) and thought I'd try to make some. Especially after reading the ingredients list on my regular toothpaste - hmm, SLS, lye..... I used mostly OO, some babassu, flavored with lip-safe spearmint EO...

    My first partial gel!

By the time I got the top molded and got it into the refrigerator I suspected it was already gelling. It felt too warm in the mold. I had a moment of indecision but as it's scented with folded orange, lavender, and patch, I wanted to preserve as much of the scent as possible. So I gave it a...

    I tried a Lyn top!

I was really happy how this turned out. Next time I'll try to mound it a little higher. Fragrance is OT Caribbean Pineapple and Spearmint EO. Thanks for looking! :D

My latest swirl attempt - getting closer

I made this with cranberry marmalade FO (the cream part will discolor to caramel over time), burgundy oxide, and black oxide (both from BB). It is for my daughter to give to fellow cast members in an upcoming production of the Nutcracker. Thanks for looking!

Question - when to unmold ungelled soap?

I normally gel my soaps but this time I didn't. I made a special soap for my husband with OO cold infused with cedar, pine, and rosemary needles to which I added an EO blend of black spruce, 5x lemon, vetiver, black pepper, and a hint of galbanum. To preserve the scent and to keep the soap...
