[gel question] Officially Hate Soap... why can't I stop?

Trying one more time in a barely warm oven and full water. Looks to have gelled. Your post was very helpful. We will see how this goes. mixed at 110 degrees and poured at heavy trace. Fully gelled after only 30 mins and opened the oven a bit at 40 mins because it seems like the top is...

    Gelled, Ungelled, Crumbles, partial gel.

Ah, the one high water recipe of ungelled soap was easy to cut. So I take that back. High water soap is harder to keep from gelling tho.

[gel question] Officially Hate Soap... why can't I stop?

40% olive 30% coconut 30% lard 30mL FO or EO 36% water 8%SF The only think that i typically change is the FO. I had a batch of honeysuckle nearly seize bc i added it too late.

    Gelled, Ungelled, Crumbles, partial gel.

High water content in ungelled soap is easy to cut without crumbling and i find it acceptable. I just wish that bubbles didn't ruin the texture of the surface in my gelled soap. I really do not heat it up that high. Just put it in a 140 degree oven with it off. That shouldn't over do it.

[gel question] Officially Hate Soap... why can't I stop?

I have been making a couple batches a week for the past month and tried every which way. Different temperatures. Cpop vs. fridge. All different results... here are fun ones. So someone please explain: 1:1 Lye to water ratio and left out uninsulated - partial gel and crumbly (was mixed at...

What happens is you pour too hot?

What would happen if I did not wait for my oils or my lye/water to cool before I mixed them? Or if I mixed them at a very high temperature say 150-160 degrees? Just curious is this would have any negative effects?

    Gelled, Ungelled, Crumbles, partial gel.

This morning I made a batch and mixed it pretty hot. Put it in the oven at 160 for 15 mins and turned it off. I will check on it tomorrow morning. Do you notice full gel after only 10 minutes? How long does it take. I use the green WSP molds.

    Gelled, Ungelled, Crumbles, partial gel.

do you find some recipies or soap blends lend themselves to being ungelled? Any advice for ensuring full gel and avoiding overheating or all the little defects that go along with it? How long do you wait to unmold and cut gelled soaps?

    Gelled, Ungelled, Crumbles, partial gel.

Like most people I despise partially gelled soap. I have done CPOP and made ungelled soap. Everything recipe I use with ungelled soap is crumbly around the corners when cutting. Example 30%coconut 35%lard 35%olive 8%superfatting 35%water (percentage of total oils) unmold after...

    Book Recommendations for me?

I own smart soap making by anne watson. Its a good basic book. But VERY basic. I would be interested in something that explores the intricacies of soapmaking. If I just want to learn a basic process I have the youtube.

    Book Recommendations for me?

I recently purchased Soap Makers Workshop by "dr. bob". It was pretty much terrible. His process and finished product look pretty amateurish. Does anyone has a good recommendation for a soap making book?

    Solvent Extraction in Oils

I don't eat many refined foods... and I can't think of anything I eat that is treated with solvents. I did notice SChoice carries alot of different COs. Does organic always mean that no solvents or chemicals are used in the extraction process?

    Solvent Extraction in Oils

What is everyone's feeling about using oils who have been extracted with the use of solvents? Is there and adverse effect to soaping with these oils or to using the product? Every time I read someone talk about avoiding olive oil pomace I think about how almost all the coconut oil out there...

Soap making troubles and pictures to go with.

I will try a batch and keep the oven off. I pour lyewater at 100-110 degrees. Yes the molds are new. Does castor encourage overheating? The purple batch was subjected to more heat and didnt butt crack, but castor did it twice. Thanks for the help... I am paranoid about partial gel, as I had...
