    Screeeech!!!! Help.

*Update* I've unmoulded all the individuals and have it warming in the crock pot. The olive oil seems to have blended in well, I might re mould rather than HP it through. I'll see what it looks like in 5.

    Screeeech!!!! Help.

Just made a 2lb batch split in to two batches - one loaf the other in individual moulds. There was me wondering why it had traced quite quickly even though I hadn't added the fragrance yet, but it was still workable to I cracked on. The loaf has fancy micas & swirls, the moulds just have...

    Re-Re-batch!

I made soap with some salt in and it crumbled, so I re-batched it in the crock pot with a cup of goats milk. It melted down great, stirred up easily and went back in to the loaf mould reasonably well. And it came out worse 😂 It originally resembled feta cubes, and came back out like crumble...

    Pre made lye got lumps...!

Just about a 1mm line. I moved the container to somewhere warmer & it's gone back to liquid now, so I think as DeeAnna said, it was in a room too cold. I just had no idea it could re-crystalise! Every day is a school day 🤓

    Pre made lye got lumps...!

Thanks very much for the reply. Not had a problem with the brand of caustic soda before so I'm hoping to rule that out. It's also not sand like, it's more like a layer as if sugar had cooled. Measured twice to be sure. I had the scales the draining board part of the sink so I double checked in...

    Pre made lye got lumps...!

Made some lye last week, cooled it down and stored in an old HDPE 2 fabric conditioner bottle. I've just looked at it and there's a crust on the bottom where it's gone solid again (much like if you were to boil sugar and cool it) I've searched the threads and can't find anyone else with this...

    Rebatching crumbly soap...

Thanks Ali. Points noted. I've never had a soap not trace before (I'm usually chasing my tail after adding FO ) I also had the stick blender flip backwards out of the batter bowl so I know I wasn't fully concentrating at that point as was in a tizz cleaning up the counter top and myself for a...

    Rebatching crumbly soap...

Thanks Shunt. Ah that's a shame as the whole Youtube video was from a lovely softly spoken, plinkety plonkety music, 95k subscribed, professional soap maker! She talked through why her recipe worked AND I BELIEVED HER! I have to say though it does lather up really well! Probably the best...

    Rebatching crumbly soap...

Hi. I spent a lot of yesterday researching the above (inc posts on this forum) and I still have questions! I followed a YouTube online salt bar recipe as follows: 50% CO 27% OO 10% Shea 7% Grapeseed 6% Castor Oil 12% Super fat Water / lye ratio 2.7 The recipe called for 10% (90g) salt, but...

    Lye not melting...

Oh my poor head :hairpulling: I keep re-reading the last two replies as it's frustrating me that I'm struggling to completely understand it all. So when you make up a masterbatch of lye, where do you keep the leftovers? DeAnna - I have a question. "In my last batch, the total water required...

    Lye not melting...

When I make a milk soap, I use the split method, adding the milk to the oils, and using my 50% lye solution (master-batched lye solution) to slowly incorporate into the oils. Of course I don't make a lot of milk soaps, and there are a lot more people here who are experts when it comes to milk...

    Lye not melting...

Thank you! That helps, as I stick blended it and smoothed it out, but I had to press it through a sieve, I think the fat separated. Milk is from my ewe who sadly had a stillborn a week ago poor girl, so I'm having to milk her and it's still going to be very rich. It was the consistency of...

    Lye not melting...

Long time reader, first time poster. Researched using sheep milk for CP soap and general consensus was to freeze milk first to reduce the risk of scorching it. I had it frozen in ice cube trays so smallish pieces. Added the lye about 40 minutes ago and have been stirring and checking...
