    First batch questions.

@thetoe Theres tons out there, but I've been enjoying these two. One of them is a coconut oil soap that is super fatted by 20%. It has to be super fatted that much. Also, the measurements given are going to produce more than 2lbs of soap, as I used 2lbs of oil, which produces more than two...

    First batch questions.

@thetoe Practice good soaping safety. Wear goggles, neoprene gloves, long shirt, pants, and close toed shoes. Dont touch soap until it's gone through saponification. Until that process has finished then it's likely that you will touch lye. That's what caused the burning sensation. If that...

Made soap and forgot the goggles

@Obsidian Yes, I have successfully made a mistake each time I've made soap. Y'all make this look easy when doing it. @DeeAnna For some reason I didnt assume there would be any fumes @Kosmerta Ill be sure to keep that in mind for the next time I have an incident :)

Made soap and forgot the goggles

from https://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/53752/reaction-between-lye-and-water It interesting that all resources point out what to do when lye gets into your eye, but not when fumes do. I guess they assume no one is looking into the lye solution when stirring because "this is really neat".

@cmzaha Would it be less disgusting as pellets? I think the scent should be lime. Nice job at the market!

Made soap and forgot the goggles

I made soap tonight and forgot to put on my goggles, but i still had my glasses on. I am fortunate that I didnt splash the lye at any time. However, I did get a good waft of fumes after combining the lye and water. After making the soap I noticed my eyes feel like ive been staring at a screen...

    Coconut soap

Can someone explain how 100% coconut oil bars can be super fatted so high without DOS occuring?

@SoapySuds Yeah they do! $35 for 5 gallons of coconut oil?! Count me in! The shipping is what kills me though, such a shame. Ive made doughnuts once. They were not great. Also, we have a doughnut seller at our market, and they are SUPER good. I think ill be able to use all thee oils in time, 1...

@cmzaha Although I want to provide the best product I can I dont think I can wait years to find the perfect recipe. This doesn't mean I will sell bad soap though. Ill wait until I produce soap that I would want to buy. The kinds of soaps I see from experts. @Zany_in_CO Yes I went a bit...

@Obsidian In my beginner experience I thought that the Coconut and Palm has some magic properties from being put together - a 1 2 punch. I realize now that that is incorrect and that they have their own properties to balance out. Do palm and lard have a different profile if they both are...

Help! Soap has a weird consistency

Good point! I believe its best to keep the combination of Linoleic and Linolenic acids below 15% of your recipie, as an example you can have 8% Linoleic and 7% Linolenic. This is a recommendation though, and only to combat DOS.

Help! Soap has a weird consistency

Im sure others will chime in, but according to soap calc you have a soft bar. From what I have gathered you will need to let the bar rest another 3-4 weeks and probably even longer due to the olive oil / sunflower oil. If you look at the Soap Bar Quality section in Dark Green above then you...

@SoapySuds Well looks like my research phase will be longer than I thought at first. What to do with 50 lbs of palm oil. Like I said, I went big. Fortunately I do have people that are testers. Ill have to remind one or two to not be nice because that is their nature. @cmzaha I thought the...

@Obsidian I'll be happy if I can wait 4 weeks. I was really hoping to have my soaps ready for the summer market. However I want yo produce quality soaps and if that means waiting till 2021 to even consider selling then wait I shall. I'm just worried if I can go through my gallons of oils. I...

@Obsidian Did you strategically pick that mold so you could test a batch during a 3 year cure?

@Obsidian Im assuming a quick frame is just 5 pieces of wood in a rectangle shape. I think even I could whip that up quickly with the small amount of tools I have. Screws, wood. @Obsidian Actually, I ordered some silicon molds that make 4 5oz soaps. I think ill just use them instead, unless a...

@Arimara Well this is good to know. Now I have a year to study up on soap. @Obsidian Testing in 1lb batches it is. Itll take me longer to get through my stockpile though. I wonder if i can split my 5lb mold into several sections so that I can do multiple different batches at a time. Im really...
