I did it, I made my first batch

Be careful when working with the goats milk. If you add the lye to room temperature goats milk it is going to cook the goats milk and caramelize the sugars in it. You'll end up with a brown liquid that doesn't make a very nice looking soap. I know, I've done it before. If using regular...

    Soap hardening

Ok, now having made a bunch of batches of soap, I'm ready to start tweaking this recipe a bit. So far, I really like how my goats milk soap turns out. The first batch I made is just about cured for 4 weeks. One thing I would like to improve is the hardness of the soap. The recipe has about...

Help- I have Goat Problems!!! :(

As for the color, I get a nice golden color in my goats milk soap but I do that by using frozen goats milk and when mixing the frozen goats milk with lye, I put the chilled bowl in the sink surrounded by water and ice. The one time I added lye to the liquid goats milk it got very hot and I...

Help- I have Goat Problems!!! :(

I made one batch of goats milk CP soap without any fragrance at all. The recipe uses 2 ounces of sweet almond oil and I added 2 ounce of oatmeal. It made a very nice soap that smells sort of nutty - not bad at all. So I don't think goats milk soap has to smell particularly bad.

    Moisturising bar

Check out some of the soap oil properties websites like http://www.soapnuts.com/indexoils.html or http://www.colebrothers.com/soap/oils.html . Look for oils that do not produce a hard bar (most of them) and that are conditioning to the skin. I personally have used Sweet almond oil...

    Vanilla Stabilizer

I made one batch of goats milk vanilla soap. It contained 2 pounds of assorted oils and to that I added one ounce of vanilla fragrance oil. The soap came out the color of milk chocolate while all my other batches of goats milk soap are a nice golden wheat color. They all used the same oil...

    Measuring soap batch sizes

My point exactly, Paul. So how do I know that all recipes that use 30 ounces of oils will fit in a mold that claims it fits a 30 ounce recipe? One recipe that uses 30 ounces of a heavy oil and 10 ounces of water and 4 ounces of lye might fit while another recipe that uses 30 ounces of a very...

    Measuring soap batch sizes

I guess I am confused and maybe not asking the right thing. I guess I am confused by why people refer to "30 ounces of oils" or "40 ounces of oils" or whatever the amount might be, when the size of the actual batch of soap could vary widely. Depending on how much liquid you use, how much...

What's in your Soap Pot this weekend?

I didn't plan on making anything this weekend - got lots of family here for the holiday. But I did place my first order for essential oils so that I can make more. Up until now, I've been getting my essential oils at a craft and hobby store and it costs a fortune per ounce. But I wanted to...

What's in your Soap Pot this weekend?

I added 2 ounces of old fashioned rolled oats to a soap that was 30 ounces of oils, 10 ounces of liquid and 4.23 ounces of lye. I processed the rolled oats in my food processor until it was the consistency of breadcrumbs. It turned out really nice. I didn't even add any fragrance to it and...

    Measuring soap batch sizes

I have a question about batch sizes. I read in the forum where people talk about making a 4 pound batch of soap or a 2 pound batch of soap. Then I also read items, and ads for soap molds that mention sizes such as "just the right size for 40 ounces of oils". When talking about the size of...

    Warning Labels?!?!

Soapmaker Man, how do you shrink wrap your soap bars. Did you purchase your own machine for that? Or do you have it done for you someplace?

    Corn Oil Question?

Didn't you ever see the movie "Driving Miss Daisy" "Hoke, take me to the Piggly Wiggly" It is a supermarket chain in the south - like Krogers or Publix or Pathmark.

    Warning Labels?!?!

I really like how you wrote that. Do you mind if I incorporate some of your idea into my labels?

    Sub for Palm Oil

Can you give an example of what your label looks like? For right now I only plan my soap to be for family for a gift but if I passed them out to people at work or other non-family I would want to have a label that contained more product information.

    Sources of non-traditional oils

I actually buy my lye at Ace Hardware. They are the only place in town I've found that still sells 100% lye. Comes in a 1 pound plastic jar for just a few dollars. I'm not a big time soap maker, just getting started, and that 1 pound makes about 4 batches for me. I'm sure if I really get...

    Premixing Oils

OK, my lye solution is 10 oz goats milk to 4.23 oz of lye. I don't add anything else. I purchase evaporated goats milk in 12 oz cans and add 8 oz of water to restore it to a concentration a little bit richer than regular goats milk. That 20 oz of goats milk gives me just enough for 2 batches...

    Purchasing Equipment

I purchased candy thermometers at Bed Bath and Beyond. They were about $10.00 each. I also purchased this scale http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product ... U=13970270 I put the pot on the scale and zero it out and then measure my solid fats directly into the pot. Once they are melted, I...

    Soap SOS!!

I made oatmeal goats milk soap this past weekend and it came out really nice. It was my third batch of soap in 3 weeks so I'm still pretty new at this. I just took my regular goats milk soap recipe and added 2oz of finely ground oatmeal (ground it up in my food processor until it was the...
