    Black Mica

Hi All! I have done a search and not found a reference to this already...I am wanting to make a black soap. I know I can use charcoal but I am interested to know if anyone has used black mica for the whole batch? And was the lather black too? Any tips for using black mica at all or should I just...

    Distilled water

In our case, a zinc coated steel roof. Probably the worst possible scenario? Sigh. So much to learn. Thank goodness for this forum and the helpful people on it. Thanks DeeAnna!

    Distilled water

Thanks DeeAnna. We are on a rural property with only rain water to drink. As mentioned on another post a few weeks ago using the water from our concrete tank (I think) created solids in the lye. Other posters suggested this could be from the mineral deposits from the roof, or from the concrete...

Hi From New South Wales, Australia

Hi Callie, Newbie here also, from Carwoola NSW, near Bungendore. I have been buying from Aussie Soap Supplies on line. Only because I didn't know of anywhere else so I have nothing to compare prices to.

    Pumice (again!)

Or Tom & Avis, who now live in Rotorua.

    Pumice (again!)

Ask ypour parents if they know my parents: Ray & Joan Wood. I'm too scared to ask who your parents are lol, they were probably our neighbours in one of about 8 towns we lived in!

What do you use to mix your Lye and Water?

LOL now I'm rocking in the corner of the room. Actually I do understand that example.

    Pumice (again!)

WELL!!!! As it happens..... yes! But not exactly when I lived there. Robyn & Grant actually lived at Upper Atiamuri I think, or maybe Ngakuru? Ohakuri? They were my aunt & uncles besties, Tom & Avis Cook. I used to milk cows for Tom & Avis in the holidays once we had left Atiamuri for the Big...

    Pumice (again!)

ATIAMURU????? I used to live there! You know how tiny that community is? And how big this forum is?? What are the chances? My parents used to own the Landmark servicestation. I don't think it's there anymore? As if the L&P wasnt enough to tip me over.... now I'm really feeling homesick lol

What do you use to mix your Lye and Water?

ah ok. I think it will be a long tiome before I am confident enough to make adjustments to a recipe on the fly like that. Mental maths not being my strong point!

    Pumice (again!)

OMG you just made me homesick with that L&P bottle!

What do you use to mix your Lye and Water?

That's a good suggestion. Does this mean you always use the same recipe? by that I mean you KNOW whatever you are making is uses x volume of 50% solution? Apologies if that's a really dumb question. I thought the ration of lye to water changes (or could) from recipe to recipe? Sigh. I have so...

What do you use to mix your Lye and Water?

I freak out mixing enough lye solution for a 1kg batch of soap! How long does 220L of lye last? Once its mixed how long can you store it for?

How do I use coconut oil?

Thanks Teresa, yes "homogonised" is the word I should have use.

How do I use coconut oil?

Thanks Deborah. I had not even considered the weight vs volume aspect! I was concerned that different parts within the CO might not solidify at the same rate therefore my solids might not contain all parts equally hope that makes sense.

How do I use coconut oil?

If cocnut oil is uniformally solid throughout the jar can I weigh it by scooping some out or do I need to melt the entire jarful first? And if I do have to melt the lot, can I do it in the microwave? And if so, how many times can it tolerate being treated like that? Will it go rancid in the jar...

    Newbie with cloudy lye

Coffee filter - brilliant! I love how these suggestions mean I am not Robinson Crusoe in the cloudy lye dept lol.
