First timer here...making seal oil soap

What an interesting thread this has been! Do you have a regular supply of seal oil? My recommendation would be to add some vitamin E (mixed tocepherols, ideally) as this can prevent or at least delay fats/oils from going rancid. Of course information on shelf life of oils and fats is easy to...

    Next Soap Experiment

I haven't used Pomace yet, so no comment there. I have used palm at a high percentage, and it does accelerate trace. Actually for me at more than 50% it was a normal time to light trace, but seconds from light trace to setting hard! I would be inclined to use less Palm for more swirling/messing...

What soapy mistake have you made today?

I used to make soap and have been itching on and off for years to start up again. So I got my, er, stuff together, and made a new mold since I have no idea where my old ones are, and today! I made my first batch of the rest of my soaping life. So exciting! I used to use milk in almost every soap...

lining wooden molds - part 1

I'm sorry, I didn't notice how old this thread was and I don't know how to just delete the message. For anyone still wondering about unmolding a lined wooden "loaf" or "log" soap mold, if you leave some extra liner on the sides (sticking up above the mold) you can lift the soap right out by...

    G'day from South Western Australia

Welcome, Helen! I may have been here longer, but I've been a lurker (I read but haven't posted). I used to make soap, years ago, and just recently started up again. My very first soap -- sometime before 2000 -- used (cow's) milk as the liquid and I so love what milk does to a soap that I use it...

    Help and advice please

It's math time! I see no reason you couldn't separate out your Olive Oil and rapeseed (likely on your lye calculator as Canola) like this -- say you want to try using 50% of this oil in a 2-lb recipe, that's 16 oz in total. Separate out the two oils in the blend, by percentage: 16 oz "olive...

    Using high % of Neem

Having recently returned to soapmaking, I bought myself a small and very accurate scale. My plan is to go ahead and make 3 or 5 oz batches of single-oil soaps, so I can learn how the oils behave! It has enough palmitic and stearic acids to make me hope for a non-squishy bar... I also strongly...
