    A Bigger Batch

How can I split the block into logs evenly?

    A Bigger Batch

I've been working with 1 or 2 lbs of soap at a time. I think I'm ready to try for something larger, but I'm a little leery of it. I have a wooden mold that I'll need to line before I even try. I have a pretty good method for cutting the bars worked out, but not sure how to cut the block into...

Ridiculed for having an interest in making soap....

I still consider myself a newbie when it comes to hand-made soaps (only about 8 months making CP), but I got a good bit of that too when I first started looking into it (about 3 months before I actually made my first soap). IME though, I don't think it's a feminine hobby. There seems to be...

    Whipped Shea body butter?

I'm going to try my hand making some of this. I have the ingredients and an idea for ratios. However, what would be the best method of 'whipping' the mixture? I have a stick blender and a hand blender (the hand blender would likely make it fluffier). Or should I just melt everything and...

    Soap Making Dangerous???

I also have very small children in the house. I soap after they've gone to bed. I have had a (thankfully minor) incident involving my toddler and a small amount of raw soap I had put in the fridge to prevent gel. She rubbed it on her bare belly, thinking it was lotion. I managed to get her...

    Using egg in soap

    Wouldn't that include milk?

    Using egg in soap

Do you use the whole thing? Or just the yolk? Should I worry about the yolk membrane and try to get it out? I'm guessing I would sub it for some of the water and just add at trace.

    Shea lotion

I once bought some very simple shea butter body lotion. I cannot get it anymore and have run out. The ingredients listed only shea butter and aloe gel. Any idea what kind of ratio might be used for it though? It was very thick lotion... could have probably been made into a lotion bar rather...

    A Different Word for Lard

How about rendered porcine byproduct. ;) I'm kidding btw, I use it and just call it lard. If you're really worried about it, why not offer both kinds of soap, with and without lard.

    Soap for washing dishes?

Can bar soap be used for dishwashing? I only thought about it because I've been making soap-saver bags as gifts and was thinking it would be great to use the whole thing for dishes. Is there any reason it can't be used?

    What's In Your Soap Pot This Week-End? (31st Oct - 1st Nov)

Nuffin' I had company that just left half an hour ago. Manners obliged me to partake of their presence rather than sequester myself in my soaping room (as I'd much prefer ;)).

Small Town Sources for Soap Supplies

I render my own beef tallow, and lard is fairly easy to find. Palm oil is organic shortening. I found walnut oil, grape seed oil, olive oil, and sesame oil in the ethnic foods section. I use a lot of herbal colorants (though I'm still learning there!). I also use coconut milk (ethnic foods...

    Inexpensive wire soap cutter

I've used it and cut bars that were 3.5 inches tall and it was fine. The cutter itself is fairly deep. You have to remember that when 'leveling' a cake, it's the depth from the table to the wire that's the concern. With cutting soaps it's the depth between the wire and the top of the cutter.

    Halloween soaps

I've done silicone molds too and they usually pop right out even without freezing. I do put mine in the fridge to prevent any kind of gel though. I haven't tried to force gel with them, but I think it would work with an oven method since the Wilton silicone molds are made to withstand high temps.

    Coffee Soap Disaster

I think it'll be okay, it just looks weirdly shaped. I cut off a thin piece and it's a uniform color, so it'll be alright. The molds are beyond help though.

    Coffee Soap Disaster

Why is it whenever I'm really happy with how a soap is turning out that something always seems to go wrong at the last minute to mess everything up. :? I had made a vanilla scented coffee soap, and it was turning out great! Smelled awesome, looked fantastic. I figured there was no way it was...

    The Littles are gone!

That means I get to do some serious soap making tonight and tomorrow! Yay!! I'm starting to have soaping withdrawals... it's been almost a month since I was able to get any CP done. ...or maybe I'll try an HP recipe this time. :D

    QUICK! Anyone on right now?

I see it, down near the bottom. It's not Brambleberry that does it, apparently that one was submitted. It also says this: "Next day stir again, cover with foil and put in oven at 200 degrees for about 90 minutes, it will be nicely liquid." Did you do this step? Sorry if I missed where...

    Using Charcoal?

I understand that charcoal can be used to color soap a grey or black. My question is how fine does it need to be? Will it cause any 'scratchiness' in the soap?

I'm curious, how much baking soda did you use?
