    Why oh why....

It is always confounding when you make a batch of soap the same way, using the same recipe as you have in the past and get a completely different result. I made a batch of my lavender soap last weekend, because I had 4 people who had used it in the past and wanted to buy some. So I made it...

Savon de Marseille....how do they cook so long.

I am fascinated by Savon de Marseille and would love to learn the secret recipe, which seems pretty much impossible. One thing about the process that baffles me though.... They cook it for 10 days, stirring constantly. How come it doesn't reach trace way before then???

    Mostly Palm Oil Soap

I have been making mostly olive oil recipes from the beginning. I was in Trader Joe's recently and whenever I see natural soaps in stores I have to check out the ingredients. I noticed their soaps are made from pretty much 2 or 3 ingredients, palm oil, palm kernal oil and coconut oil (some...

Peak French Vanilla Amber and frozen oils

Went down to my rather cold basement yesterday and brought up my pails of coconut and palm oil to make soap. They were both totally frozen!! I had to chip the oil out with a large metal spoon. Melted it and made soap anyway. Don't know how it will be affected, if at all. Anyone else have...

    BBW Pump Lotion Bottles

I am trying to find a source for the cobalt blue (or clear, or amber) glass pump lotion bottles that Bath and Body Works uses for their 6.5 oz body lotion. Its sort of flat, and his little ribs on the side. I have found plenty of sources for the boston rounds, and different shaped ones in PET...

    Trying new things.

Two projects tonight......... The first was a modified version of my usual recipe to a really high percentage of olive oil. Would almost qualify as Castile. (Unless you're Dr. Bronner, then it's way past Castile.) Used LabColor for the first time. Was surprised to see Mauved Pink come out...

My first craft fair in November

I have registered for my first craft fair on Nov 14th. It's a really small one done by a local volunteer fire department. The entry fee was only $20. This was perfect for my first try because it isn't so huge or expensive as to be overwhelming. It gives me time to get all my "ducks in a row"...

My first halfway decent swirled soap - Pics

I tried some new stuff last night, some of it worked, some of it "not so much". First I swirled in the pot. That came out okay. Certainly not as artistic as what most of you girls do, but I it's not awful. I used ultramarine violet from Brambleberry. I also put a half teaspoon of TD in...

    Body butter questions

I am dying to try making a shea body butter and I have 2 questions. What kind of percentages do you usually use for your FO? And do any of you add a preservative and if so, what? Thank you very much!!! Becky

    What are your favorite colors?

I am just beginning to look at coloring my soaps and I am very interested in hearing what everyone uses for color and where you get it.

Describing the properties of "Soap", and shea and

2 questions.... I make shea butter soap. I love it, my skin loves it, my friends and family love it and the one recipe that I have developed that I feel is near to perfect contains shea. So, say I want (at some point) to sell this wonderful shea butter soap, but I am not interested in...

Mango Peach Salsa FO from Peak - UPDATE

Today I received my sampler of FO's from Peak. They put a free sample in the box of Mango Peach Salsa. It smelled really nice and I just happened to have a bottle of peach dye from A.C. Moore's to try so I decided to make a small batch. The recipe was a common OO-PO-CO-Castor. It had...

    IT'S CHRISTMAS IN JULY!!!!!

I received 2 boxes of goodies just a little bit ago and I am doing the happy dance for sure. I got my fragrance sampler from Peak, and all 10 I ordered plus one free sample they put in are awesome. My particular favorites are Black Canyon, Love Spell, French Vanilla & Amber, and Bayberry. But...

Does Peak Wild Mtn. Honey FO discolor?

Did the Wild Mtn. Honey discolor? I was just doing a batch of oatmeal milk and honey soap, used the wild mtn. honey fo. I had acheived light trace and was just stirring away. The batch had turned this absolutely lovely butterscotch pudding color, sortof light orangeish. I hadn't planned to...

    Rebatching question....

I made a 100% coconut oil soap which I just tried tonight, and even at a 20% superfat, with my super-sensitive skin, it is just too harsh for me. I made it with all water and Bay Rum EO. I also have a batch of 100% olive oil castile, made with goats milk, that is about the same age...

    Additives with fat........

Just wondering..... If you are adding things to your soap at trace that have fat content, such as goats milk or coconut milk, would that not be the same thing as superfatting? I mean, if some of the lye goes to saponify the fats in the additive that will leave more of your other fats...

    The Soapery, Bardstown KY

We are on vacation right now in my beautiful home state of KY. Yesterday we visited a handmade soap shop in Bardstown called the Soapery. They make everything right there on sight so I asked if I could look around "in the back" to see what they had going on. They had rows of PVC pipe...
